The strong second half continued for the Portland Rockets as they won all three games this weekend.
Portland swept a double-header at home Saturday, handing losses of 12-3 and 10-8 to U.S. Athletic Blue. The team traveled to Celina, Ohio, Saturday and took a 7-4 victory over the Grand Lake Mariners.
Heath Williams, a Jay County High School graduate, racked up five hits in the sweep of U.S. Athletic Blue. Corey Waldrath and Cory Locke added three hits in games one and two respectively.
Garrett Wiejak earned the opening win, giving up just three runs on five hits, and Eric Van Matre picked up the game-two save in his first Rocket action of the year.
Van Matre also went the distance Sunday, earning the victory as he gave up four runs on five hits. Shannon McCormick had two hits, including a solo home run, and Joe Mack, Lenny Koesters and Mitch Waters (JCHS) also had two hits apiece.
The Rockets are up to 12-15 after losing their first 10 games of the season.
J-R falls to 2-19
RICHMOND - The struggles continued for the Jay-Randolph American Legion baseball team Sunday as it dropped games to Richmond 4-2 and 11-5.
The team is 2-19 on the season.
Jay County High School graduate Andy Hughes kept his team close in game one, allowing four runs on seven hits. He also had two hits and an RBI offensively.
Spencer Cook added two hits, a run and an RBI, and Tony McCowan (JCHS) also had a hit.
Luke Morrison gave up four runs on three hits and three walks in three innings to suffer the game-two defeat. McCowan tossed one scoreless inning of relief.
Josh Rodeffer paced the offense with two hits and two runs, and Cameron Stephens added two hits, a run and an RBI. Hughes finished with a single, a run and an RBI, and McCowan added one hit.[[In-content Ad]]
