Rockets top Moons, now 24-3 (07/18/03)

With a trip to South Bend looming, the Portland Rockets’ winning streak just keeps getting longer.

With an 11-9 comeback victory over the Coldwater Moons Thursday the Rockets won their 15th contest in a row to run their outstanding season record to 24-3. They will visit the defending American Amateur Baseball Congress state champion South Bend Senators and the South Bend Indians this weekend for a pair of double-headers.

Portland fell behind 7-4 after five innings against the Moons, but quickly roared back to take the lead in the sixth inning. It finished with 17 hits.

Four of those hits came from center fielder Adam Childs. Josh Mayfield and Matthew Curtis each had three hits.

Korey Heppard entered and tossed four scoreless innings of relief for the win. Ty Henkaline earned the save.

Soccer notes

There will be a Jay County Soccer Club meeting Tuesday.

The meeting will be at the Jay Community Center at 6 p.m.

There are also still roster spots open on the club’s boys and girls under-10, under-12 or under-14 fall traveling soccer teams.

Jay-Randolph wins

The Jay-Randolph Bulldogs American Legion baseball team scored five times in the second inning Wednesday and never trailed as its snapped a long losing streak with a 7-5 win over New Castle.

Andy Swanagan led off the all-important second inning with a single. A walk by James Brannan followed, and Brandon Emrick read on an error.

Josh Atkinson was then hit by a pitch, and Tyler Croyle, Bryan Dodd and Cameron Troxell each knocked hits to finish the scoring.

New Castle cut the lead to 6-4 with single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but the teams traded runs in the ninth for the final margin.

Emrick took the win for Jay-Randolph (2-13), allowing three runs — two earned — on seven hits in six innings.

Dodd went 3-for-5 in the contest with two runs and two RBIs. Troxell had two hits and three RBIs, and Croyle had two hits, one run and one RBI.

Jay County’s Josh Shatto was 1-for-1, and Josh Atkinson scored a run.

Cheer clinic

The Jay County High School cheerleader clinic will begins Monday at Jay County High School.

The clinic will be run by JCHS coach Mindy Weaver, her staff, and the JCHS varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders. It is open to anyone who will be in kindergarten through eighth grade for the upcoming school year.

The clinic will run Monday through Thursday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Registration will begin prior to the first day of camp at 12:15 p.m.

The cost of the clinic is $10. T-shirts and shorts can also be ordered on the first day of camp for an additional $10.

Pool passes discounted

Season Passes for the Portland Pool are now half price and the discounted price will last through the rest of the swim season.

Season passes are now $25 for a single pass, $42.50 for a family pass for two to three members and $50 for a family of four or more.

Also, hours will be 12:30 until 5 p.m. during the week of the Jay County Fair. For all other regular weeks, hours will remain 12:30 to 8 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
