Rockets triple to 30th W
Portland Rockets
Three was the magic number for the Rockets Tuesday as they downed Crumback-Symons Chevrolet 5-1 in Fort Wayne.
The Rockets hit four triples, scored four of their five runs in the final three innings and ended the season with their 30th win.
Crumback held the Rockets close on their home field until the seventh, when Heath Williams drew a two-out walk. Cameron Brannock followed up with a triple to left-center and gave Portland the go-ahead.
It would be all the Rockets needed, but insurance was added in the eighth when Ryan Shell tripled then scored on a wild pitch with two outs. In the ninth, Jensen Painter slammed a bases-loaded triple to seal the game.
Of the team's six hits, four were triples. Brannock and Shell had two hits apiece.
The Rockets were supported by a strong pitching effort as well to keep Crumback supressed, as four Portland pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts.
Starter Josh Shatto went four-and-a-third innings, giving up one run on two hits with six K's. In relief, Nick Bruns took out all five batters he faced on strikeouts, Bill Geeslin pitched two innings with three K's and Tyler Miller closed out the final six batters batters in a row, five on strikeouts.
The Rockets closed out the regular season at 30-10 on a 12-game winning streak. The team went 18-1 in July, dropping their only game during the month to the South Bend Senators.
Portland will now prepare for the World Baseball Congress tournament beginning this weekend in town. Eight teams will play through the weekend at Runkle-Miller Field and Jay County High School beginning Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Runkle-Miller with Decatur facing Cincinnati. The Rockets will square off Friday against the Battle Creek Buds at 7:30 p.m.
Admission prices at the tournament are $3 per game or $5 for an all-access pass.[[In-content Ad]]
