Ronald to attend conference

Taking note

A Jay County High School junior has been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) in Washington, D.C. and New York City in June.

Sara Ronald, daughter of Jack and Connie Ronald, Portland, will travel to the nation’s capital and attend the conference with 349 other students from around the world.

The theme for this year’s conference is The Leaders of Tomorrow Preparing for the Global Challenges and Responsibilities of the Future. While attending the conference, students will interact with key leaders and newsmakers with powerful influence over politics, finance, culture and diplomacy, and will participate in curriculum that includes simulations that build leadership skills.

Students will negotiate, debate and build coalitions dealing with issues such as foreign aid, global warming, cooperative efforts in space, terrorism and human rights.

Past conference highlights include remarks from young leaders in the international community, a briefing at the U.S. Department of State, a United Nations address, and site visits at financial institutions on Wall Street, as well as several other events.

HISTORY PROJECT

Minnetrista Cultural Center has partnered with the Library of Congress and its American Folklife Center in the Veterans History Project.

The national effort to collect and preserve these stories of the East Central Indiana’s civilian volunteers, support staff, war industry workers and the military personnel of all ranks and all branches of service will be supported by Minnetrista with tapes and transcripts that will be archived and accessible for researchers.

Information of the oral histories will be sent to the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Registry of Service which appears on the Library’s website, www.loc.gov/folklife/vets, and includes the individual’s name, branch of service or wartime occupation, and the wars served.[[In-content Ad]]
