Round-up begins in the spring

Kindergarten round-up will begin in the Jay County Corporation in the spring for children who will be five by Aug. 1, 2011.
Judge Hayes Elementary round-up will be Thursday, March 31; General Shanks Elementary round-up will be Tuesday, April 5; Redkey Elementary round-up will be Tuesday, April 5; Pennville Elementary round-up will be Wednesday, April 6; Westlawn Elementary round-up will be Wednesday, April 6; East Elementary round-up will be Thursday, April 7, and Bloomfield Elementary round-up will be Friday, April 1.
All sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. and parents will need to show the child’s birth certificate and immunization records.

Speech contest
Students from General Shanks recently competed in the Optimist Oratorical Contest with the theme “If I Were the Leader of the Free World, the First Issue I Would Address Would Be…”
First place in the girls division was Julia McClung. She is the daughter of Kent and Anniemarie McClung. First place in the boys division was Ethan Theurer. He is the son of Reuben and Lori Theurer.
Alternates were Avery Gaskill, the daughter of Joseph and Debra Gaskill, and Alexander Lemaster, the son of Chad and Rebecca Lemaster.

Dean’s list
Indiana University Purdue University in Fort Wayne named area students to the dean’s and honors list for the fall semester.
Tiffani Bickel, Tracy Cline, Kari Cummings, Sheena Hodgson and Kelsey Wood, all from Portland.
Austin Flynn was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Wabash College in Crawfordsville. He is a senior majoring in English. His parents are Steve and Carlotta Flynn, Redkey.
Sara Garringer, Redkey, was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Tristan Rodden and Laura Vogler, both from Portland, were named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Anderson University.
