Runyon leads gymnasts at Valpo (01/19/2009)

VALPARAISO - Nadlie Runyon put up the high score for the Jay County High School gymnastics team in every event Saturday at the Valparaiso Invitational.

Runyon's best effort came with a sixth-place finish on the floor exercise, where she scored a 9.05 to lead her to a fifth-place all-around total of 34.525. The junior was also seventh on the balance beam at 8.8, and ninth on both the vault (8.65) and uneven bars (8.025).

Sophomore Kristen Ainsworth had the No. 2 score for the Patriots in each event, taking 11th on the beam at 7.975. She added an 8.4 on the vault, and 8.2 on the floor and a 7.175 on the bars.

Lexie Rowles added an 8.25 for the Patriots on the vault. Other No. 3 gymnasts on the day for JCHS were Lyndee Evans (7.7), Stormi Metcalf (6.85) and Melynda Brackman (6.4).

East Jay wins

East Jay and West Jay middle schools each made both championship games Saturday, and the host Chiefs earned both titles at the East Jay Invitational.

The EJMS eighth graders defeated West Jay 47-19 while the seventh graders fought off the Eagles 32-27.

Brock McFarland led the Chiefs in the eighth grade titles game with 15 points. Cade Price followed with 10 points while Tyler Back scored seven to lead West Jay.

Trey Teagle powered the East Jay seventh grade team's title win with 14 points. Zane Shreve followed with eight points.

McFarland also had 20 points in the 53-26 opening-round win over Bellmont. Scott Schwieterman and Kegan Comer added 10 apiece.

Jason Farmer buried five 3-pointers on the way to 16 points to lead West Jay over St. Joe 42-29.

Blake Crouch followed with nine points.

Shreve powered the EJMS seventh graders in their 41-23 opening-round win over Bellmont.

Teagle added six points.

Keen leads Jay

MUNCIE - James Keen powered the Jay County Winter Swim Team, which finished fourth this weekend at the Ball State University Spring Invitational.

Keen won every event in the 12-year-old boys division to earn high-point honors. Sidney Sprunger and Sydney Mathias also picked up high-point honors by winning four of the five events in their divisions.

Ashley Mark won the 10-year-old girls 50 breaststroke, and others in the top three were Sophie Bader, Caitlin Mark, Anna Nussbaum and Kenzie Knisely.[[In-content Ad]]
