Runyon, Patriots win conference meet
JCHS gymnastics
Nadlie Runyon put up a season best on the beam to lead Jay County to a win in a conference gymnastics meet Saturday.
The Patriots earned 99.725 points to top Connersville, 84.675, and Muncie Southside, 81.375. Runyon, Katie Snyder and Kristen Ainsworth finished 1-2-3 in all-around scoring for the Patriots to claim the victory.
Runyon dominated on the beam, posting a 9.4 in the event, nearly a full point better than her JCHS teammates Katie Snyder, who finished second in the event with 8.45.
She also won on the floor with an 8.8, finished third in the vault with an 8.6, and added a 7.7 on the uneven bars to finish with 34.5 on the day.
Snyder placed in all four events, taking the vault with an 8.8 and collecting second place finishes on the beam and bars (8.025) and rounded out her day with a third place on the floor (8.35), finishing with 33.625 overall.
Ainsworth scooped up a win with a 8.15 on the bars to lead her third place finish of 31.6.
Fort boys win again
The Fort Recovery boys warmed up after a quarter and rolled over the Houston Wildcats the rest of the way on their way to a 54-38 victory.
After giving up 12 points in the first quarter and falling behind 12-10 at the end of the period, the Indians held Houston to 12 points total during the next two quarters - seven in the second and five in the third - as their offense took over.
Senior Greg Kahlig manhandled Houston, pouring in 29 points and tearing down 16 rebounds to lead the Indians (16-1). Michael Gaerke added eight points and Cody Fiely chipped in six.
In junior varsity action, the Tribe fought back after being blanked in the first quarter to claim a 37-34 overtime victory. Jared Kahlig had 15 points and six rebounds in the win.
The schedule for the sectional at Coldwater High School was released over the weekend and Fort Recovery will have a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed. The Tribe will play the winner of either New Knoxville (11-6) vs. Waynesfield (4-12) on March 5.
Shooting dooms girls
The Indians shot 25 percent in the second half as they fell 51-40 to Marion Local.
The Tribe shot 16-51 (31 percent) on the evening and had a rough second half as they tried to make up ground from a 24-21 deficit at the half. They cut the Flyers' lead down to 35-33 after three, but couldn't lock down Marion Local in the final period.
Nine Indians scored on the evening, led by Olivia Thien, who had 9 points off the bench. Emily May dropped seven points and dished out three assists and Nicole Pottkotter had five points to go with three steals.
The junior varsity squad made a fourth quarter comeback to win 52-47. Chelsea Pottkotter had 13 points and Janelle Schwieterman added 10 off the bench.
Middle-schoolers lose
Fort Recovery Middle School's girls teams both fell in tournament action this weekend.
The eighth grade team had only two points going into halftime on their way to a 28-10 loss to Coldwater to end its season. Lexi Schmitz had three points in the loss.
The seventh graders had an equally rough time, falling 29-7 to Minster. Tori Lennartz had five points and Kara Jutte contributed two in the loss.[[In-content Ad]]
