Runyon powers Patriots

HAGERSTOWN — The Patriots took control early and never let their hosts take the lead in the second half.
Jay County High School’s freshman boys basketball team picked up its eighth win of the season on Tuesday, 39-29 over the Hagerstown Tigers.
The Patriots got off to a quick start and led by 10 points after the opening quarter. Hagerstown closed to within five in the second half, but never got any closer.
Bowen Runyon tallied 16 points to lead Jay County, which improved to 8-3. Adam Dirksen joined him in double figures with 11 points, and Chandler Jacks added six.
Nate Combs was the only Tiger to reach double figures as he posted 10 points.

WJ sixth graders roll
West Jay Middle School’s sixth grade basketball teams rolled to a couple of victories Tuesday. The girls team traveled to Muncie to defeat host Wilson 43-20 while the boys topped Wilson at home 33-19.
Shelby Caldwell torched Wilson to lead the girls team, racking up 28 points.
Rhegan Shimp added seven points, and Kensey Litton scored six.
Gabe Faulkner tallied 19 points to lead the boys, who improved to 2-0. Wyatt Geesaman added seven points.
The boys B team fell 12-9 to Wilson with Jaden Robbins scoring six points.
The girls team also topped East Jay 40-15 on Monday with Shelby Caldwell scoring 24 points to lead the way.

Chiefs win first
The East Jay sixth grade girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season 51-2 Tuesday over West Side (Union City).
Hannah Phillips powered the Chiefs (1-1) as she scored 16 points. Kendra Muhlenkamp added 10 points, and Klarisa Hemmelgarn scored six.
In the B team game, Gwen Butcher scored eight points to lead EJMS to a 24-4 victory.

Jay wrestlers 11th
The Jay County Elementary Wrestling Team finished 11th out of 16 teams at Sunday’s Indiana State Wrestling Association Elementary State Duals.
Jay County defeated Duneland 43-31 and Ben Davis 58-32. It suffered losses of 42-38 to Delta, 70-21 to Perry Meridian and 59-26 to Columbus East.
Landon Garringer (40) was the only Jay County wrestler to finish undefeated as he posted a perfect 5-0 record. Tony Wood (45) and Kade Zadylak (80) each went 4-1, and Sean Bailey (50), Christian Summersett (85), Mason Winner (95), Dakota Lairson (105) and Hunter Lairson (HWT) all finished 3-2.
