SA blanks the Warriors

South Adams roundup

BERNE — After five straight losses, the Starfires have now put together back-to-back wins.
Sharon Balsiger staked the South Adams High School girls soccer team to a 2-0, first-half lead Saturday on the way to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Woodlan Warriors.
Balsiger got the Starfires (4-9), who had dropped five in a row before topping Lakewood Park Christian 3-1 Sept. 17, on the board off an assist from Rachel Simon early in the first half. The freshman took a pass from Morgan Haines to score again for the two-goal lead at the intermission.
Olivia Turner scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Michaela Rupp to push the lead to 3-0. Turner then assisted on a goal by Haines for the final margin.
Alaina Johnston finished with three saves for SAHS, and Jordan Brown added one.

Moore victorious
FORT WAYNE — Hannah Moore earned the individual title Saturday as the South Adams cross country teams each finished second at the New Haven Invitational.
The Starfire boys scored 83 points to finish second to Frankton (79) in a 16-team field. Moore’s effort led the SAHS girls to 97 points as they finished second out of 11 teams behind Westview (81).
Moore was the only girl to break the 20-minute mark, taking the top spot by eight seconds over Westview’s Kaitlyn Warren in 19 minutes, 53.02 seconds. Kristen Muselman joined her in the top 10 in seventh place at 20:38, followed by Jenna Smith (17th – 21:45), Allison Amstutz (22nd – 22:03) and Sydne Zuber (58th – 24:33).
Evan Liechty and Brody Shane placed fifth and sixth respectively to lead the South Adams boys in times of 16:43 and 16:50. Joel Hawbaker was 12th at 17:22 ahead of Simon Sprunger (31st – 18:05) and Cody Sprunger (33rd – 18:09).

Boys soccer falls
WOOBURN — The Starfires got on the scoreboard for the first time this month, but still suffered their eighth straight loss 5-3 to the host Woodlan Warriors.
South Adams (1-11), which had been outscored 37-0 over its last seven games, finally broke its scoreless streak with three second-half goals against the Warriors. Sophomore Dustin Dellinger assisted on all three scores, the first of which came from junior Cameron Lengerich.
Sophomores John O’Donnell and Ivan Fernandez also scored for the Starfires, but they could not quite keep pace with Woodlan in the defeat.
L.J. Moser finished with five saves.

FORT WAYNE — South Adams Middle School’s girls cross country team dominated the small-school division at Saturday’s New Haven Invitational, scoring 20 points to finish 70 ahead of runner-up Eastbrook at the nine-team event.
