BERNE — Nineteen hits powered the Starfires as they fought their way back to .500.
The South Adams High School softball team cruised to a 14-5 victory Thursday, evening its record at 3-3.
Alyssa Bluhm led the effort at the plate with three hits, including a double and a triple, four RBIs and four runs for the Starfires, who blew open the game with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Lydnsey Chandler had four hits and three runs, Brianna Nevil added three hits and three runs and Alexis Ford finished with five RBIs. Lily Taing also scored three times.
Bluhm also picked up the win as just one run against her was earned. She struck out 11 batters while giving up five hits and six walks.
Tennis stays winless
OSSIAN — The Starfires fell to 0-3 Thursday as they suffered a 5-0 loss to the host Norwell Knights.
South Adams won more than a single game in just one match, with Holly Taylor and Faith VonGunten falling 6-1, 6-1 to Jessica Rupright and Addie Williams at No. 1 doubles.
Megan Hreha and Shiana Scott lost by a shutout to Taylor Sprinkle and Laken Chaney.
In singles action, Madi Graber fell 6-0, 6-1 to Brittany Barger at No. 1, Erika Miller lost 6-0, 6-1 to Lyndsey Havener at No. 2 and Madison Kloepper suffered a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Rachel Phillips at No. 3.
SAHS also dropped the junior varsity match, 8-0.
Baseball loses
FORT WAYNE — South Adams scored its fair share of runs, but walks and errors proved costly as it lost 11-8 Thursday to the host Bishop Luers Knights.
Dustin Wanner suffered the loss for the Starfires, who led 7-4 before giving up seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. He allowed eight runs — five earned — on four hits and nine walks in five innings.
Wanner led the offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Corey Seffernick had one hit, three walks, two runs and an RBI for the Starfires, who scored five times in the top of the sixth inning before giving up the advantage in the bottom of the frame.
