SA drops to seventh

INDIANAPOLIS — Sometimes the polls just don’t seem to make sense.
Despite handing previously undefeated Garrett its first loss Friday, South Adams dropped a spot in the Class 1A Associated Press high school football poll released Monday.
The Starfires, who were tied for sixth with Rockville last week, slipped to No. 7 with 100 poll points. They were 14 points behind No. 6 Rockville and 10 ahead of eighth-ranked Sheridan.
Two-time defending state champion Lafayette Catholic remains No. 1, having earned every first-place vote.
South Adams racked up more than 300 yards on the ground in its 21-7 win Friday over Garrett (6-1). The Starfires’ only loss this season came to Class 4A No. 6 Leo.

Luers advances
BERNE — The Bishop Luers Saints survived in overtime Tuesday and will play the host Starfires in the boys soccer sectional tournament at South Adams High School.
Bishop Luers (11-4-1) got the winning goal from Brenden Gonzalez in overtime in its 2-1, opening-round victory over the Blackhawk Christian Braves. Nick Strack, who leads the team with 15 goals and nine assists, also scored for the Saints.
Nick Didion had the only goal for Blackhawk Christian (9-5-2).
South Adams (2-13) and Bishop Luers will meet in the semifinal round of the tournament Thursday at 5 p.m. The Starfires’ only wins this season came by scores of 8-2 over Muncie Southside and 5-0 over Union City.

JC JV football falls
Jay County’s junior varsity football team suffered a 50-6 loss Monday to the Pendleton Heights Arabians.
The Patriots scored their only points on an 80-yard kickoff return by Chase Louck in the opening quarter. They trailed just 10-6 after the first period, but gave up 20 points in the second and 14 in the third.
Radney Pearson led the JCHS defense with three sacks and a fumble recovery.

Tribe tops WJMS
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Middle School volleyball teams swept matches Monday against West Jay. The Tribe eighth graders won 25-5, 25-20 and the FRMS seventh grade team topped the Eagles 25-20, 25-10.
Kendra Siefring led the Fort Recovery eighth grade squad with five service points and four kills. Kirsten Jutte had four assists and three kills, and Morgan Lennartz totaled eight service points.
Devin Post finished with eight service points and five kills for the Tribe seventh graders. Emily Hart scored 13 service points.
Both Fort Recovery teams are 6-7.

Minnich, Moeller win
Emi Minnich and Trevor Moeller each finished first Monday in leading their East Jay cross country teams to victory.
The Chief girls scored 18 points to win in a four-team meet against West Jay, Delta and Wes-Del. EJMS also won the sixth and seventh grade boys competition with 25 points, and finished second to Delta in the eighth grade boys race.
Minnich took the top spot in the girls race in 13 minutes, 26 seconds as East Jay put five runners in the top six. Moeller posted a winning time of 13:14 in the sixth and seventh grade boys race, and Tanner Craw paced West Jay in fifth place with a time of 14:16.
Matthew Cox was the top runner for EJMS in the eighth grade boys race, finishing third in 13:01.

EJ defeats Bears
The East Jay Middle School eighth grade volleyball team rolled to a 25-18, 25-13 victory Monday over the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears.
The sixth graders also won, 20-25, 25-15, 15-13.
Mallory Marshall and Gabby Hart each finished with eight service points and four aces to lead the Chief eighth graders (11-8). Ava Kunkler and Kylie Osborne notched four kills apiece.
Kaylee Inman led the sixth grade team to victory with 11 service points and five aces. Irene Braun added seven service points and three aces as the Chiefs picked up their first win of the season.
Inman also had eight service points Thursday in a 25-16, 25-22 loss to R.J. Baskett (Gas City).

Muhlenkamp leads
Gavin Muhlenkamp was the top scorer Saturday in the Jay Community Center Boomer fall soccer league.
Muhlenkamp scored seven times to lead Columbia Blue to a 9-0 victory over Purple in the first/second grade division. Other leading scorers were Giovanni Perod in the third/fourth grade division and Gavin Lopez in the seventh/eighth grade division with three goals apiece.
In the JCC flag football league Lyndon Brinkerhoff scored five touchdowns to lead Red to a 38-32 victory over Green, which also got five TDs from Sean Bailey. Quinn Faulkner and Hunter Miller each scored three TDs in the first through third grade division.[[In-content Ad]]
