SA falls short against Generals (09/18/07)

BERNE - The South Adams High School boys tennis team played one of its closest matches of the year Monday, but fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Wayne Generals.

The Starfires won both doubles matches and pushed one of the singles matches to a third set, only to fall short of gaining their second win of the 2007 season.

Jacob Smith and Daniel Dynes dominated the No. 2 doubles competition, defeating Cameron Powell and Austin Powell 6-0, 6-3. Kyle Schmidt and Landyn Waugh controlled the No. 1 doubles match for a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Dan Kozer and Wes Revello.

Chase Ingle gave South Adams a chance as he won the opening set at No. 2 singles. However, Wes Springer of the Generals rallied back to beat Ingle 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 1 singles Brett Wagner lost 6-3, 6-3 to Matt Shultz, and at No. 3 singles Kegan Sprunger fell 6-2, 6-1 to Nitco Ronzos.

Cards defeat Fort

CELINA - Brady Kahlig and Dustin Grieshop turned in matching 45s, but it was not enough as the Fort Recovery boys golf team lost 166-188 to the New Bremen Cardinals.

New Bremen notched four scores of 43 or better at Mercer County Elks Golf Club, with Martin Holdren earning medalist honors with a 40.

Kahlig led the Indians with the lone birdie of the day on the 140-yard, par-3 second hole. He also had a pair of pars, including on the 250-yard, par-4 ninth, for his 45.

Grieshop parred three of the first five holes and the 523-yard, par-5 eighth to match Kahlig's score. Travis Hart had six bogeys for a 48, and Tommy Staugler notched a par and two bogeys for a 50 to round out the team score.

Curtis Schroer and Brandon Steinbrunner each finished at 51.

Anna blanks Tribe

FORT RECOVERY - Fort Recovery's freshman football team took at 38-0 loss Monday against the Anna Rockets. Anna took control with 14 points in the opening quarter and another 16 in the second.

Eagle 6th grade tops Delta

The East Jay Middle School sixth grade volleyball team picked up a big win Monday, defeating the Delta Eagles 25-20, 25-16. In the eighth grade match the host Chiefs fell 25-21, 22-25, 15-6, and in seventh-grade action they lost 25-15, 25-14.

Katie Aker led the victory for the EJMS sixth graders (2-1) with eight points and three digs. Rachelle Boolman followed with seven points, and Abby Dunlavy had a kill.

Alyssa Rigby racked up 17 assists and six points for the Chief eighth graders (4-2). Mariah Hornaday had nine kills and four blocks, and Maria Murphy finished with five kills and five blocks. Kassi Hemmelgarn added 14 assists, Megan May scored 13 points, Jennifer Dirksen came up with eight digs and Danielle Wellman had five digs.

Hannah Ainsworth scored two points and put up two assists for the East Jay seventh graders, who suffered their first loss to fall to 5-1. Rachelle Jackson had three points, and Lexie Gierhart and Samantha Homan each added two points.
