DALEVILLE - The Starfires showed the promise they hope will take some of them all the way to Indianapolis.
South Adams High School turned in an impressive opening day Saturday, winning all four of its matches to take the championship at the Bronco Super Duals.
It defeated Northeastern 69-9, Brebeuf 78-0, Manual 58-20 and Noblesville 47-24 in the championship match.
Chase Sprunger (140) and Jackson Werst (215) powered South Adams on the day, each finishing 4-0 with three pints. Josh Ehr (112) and John Striker (135) each went 3-0 with three pins, Colt Gentis (119) was 3-0 and Jim Marbach (125) and Josh Mann (130) each finished 2-0. Jim West added a 3-1 record.
En route to the tournament title, South Adams set a couple of records. It's 78-0 victory over Brebeuf tied the school mark for points in a dual match, and also marked the first shutout in Starfire history.
Jay 3-4 on first weekend
NEW CASTLE - Casey Kenney and Josh Lochtefeld each posted undefeated records as Jay County went 3-4 at the New Castle Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The Patriots defeated Blue River 53-18, Columbus East 45-30 and Lincoln 70-12 while suffering close losses to Milan (39-36) and Olympic Athletic Conference rival Connersville (33-32). JCHS also lost 53-20 to Westfield and 41-28 to the host Trojans.
Kenney and Lochtefeld, each bumped up a weight class from a year ago, finished 7-0 at 112 and 125 pounds respectively.
Jay County, wrestling minutes a few key athletes in its first action, had winning marks in six of the seven lightest weight classes. Joining Kenney and Lochtefeld were Caleb Culy (130) and Ben Theurer (135) at 6-1, Skylar Finnerty (140) at 5-2 and Drake Meska (103) at 4-3.
