BERNE - The host Starfires and the Jay County Patriots took the top two spots Saturday at the South Adams Invitational.
SAHS was a perfect 5-0, defeating Jay County 43-22, Park Tudor 72-0, Harding 60-21, Union City 70-12 and Eastbrook 55-24. The Patriots were 4-1, topping Union City 53-27, Eastbrook 60-21, Harding 51-27 and Park Tudor 72-6.
Seven Starfires turned in perfect records for the day, including 5-0 marks with four pins apiece from T.J. Burnfield (140) and Josh Ehr (145). Adam Hofstetter (160) and Nick Taylor (171) were both 4-0, and L.J. Moser (103), John Striker (119) and Jim West (HWT) all finished at 3-0.
Todd Batt (125) added a 4-1 record, and Charlie Hirschy (135), Isaac Werst (152) and Cody Conner (189) were all 3-1.
Three JCHS wrestlers were perfect on the day with Drake Meska (130), Kyle Garringer (189) and Matt James (215) all turning in 5-0 marks. Dustin Tighe (119), Dyllan Derrickson (140), Eric Beougher (160) and Kyler Blowers (HWT) were all 4-1.
Hai Hong (135) finished 3-1, and Nick Leonhard (145) was 3-2.
The head-to-head match between the two area schools saw several tight matches, including Garringer eking out a 3-2 win over Conner. James defeated Drew Taylor 3-1, and West knocked off Blowers 3-1.
South Adams also got decision wins from Burnfield 15-9 over Derrickson and Werst 6-0 over Heng Hong. Nick Taylor added an 8-0 major decision against Daniel Ring.
Pins for the Starfires came from Ehr over Nick Leonhard, Hofstetter against Beougher, L.J. Moser versus Robert Cooper, Striker over Tighe and Batt over Chase Louck.
Drake Meska had a major decision for JCHS 10-1 against Hirschy.
The match included a scary moment when Cooper injured his back in the loss to Moser. He laid sprawled on the mat for more than 15 minutes and was placed on a backboard and taken to Adams Memorial Hospital.
X-rays came back negative and Cooper was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon.[[In-content Ad]]
