SA netters take opener

South Adams roundup

BERNE — The Starfires’ No. 1s came through in their first match.
Scott Hoeppner and the team of Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz, all seniors, powered the South Adams High School boys tennis team to a 3-2 victory Tuesday over the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons.
Both matches turned as the Starfire players came out on top of first-set tiebreakers by 7-4 scores. Hoeppner went on to defeat Dustin Detro 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Frank and Schwartz topped Reny Keener and Daniel Wallace by the same score at No. 1 doubles.
Brayden Myers, a junior, finished off the South Adams victory with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Jalen Cox at No. 3 singles.
Mark Muselman dropped a 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 decision to Gavin Cox at No. 2 singles, and Jon Steffen and J.D. Tarr lost 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to Jack Roberts and Isaiah Davis at No. 2 doubles.
In junior varsity action, the team of Landon Lehman and Dylan Pierce picked up the lone Starfire win as the team lost 2-1.

All leads golfers
GENEVA — Kristal All racked up three pars in the final five holes to lead South Adams to a 195-201 victory Tuesday over the Bishop Luers Saints at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
All’s pars came on the 385-yard, par-4 fifth hole, the 258-yard, par-4 seventh and the 85-yard, par-3 ninth. She shot 46 to pace the Starfires while Libby Devlin of Bishop Luers earned medalist honors with a 43.
Abbie Fisher matched All with three pars in her round of 48 for South Adams (2-2), and Kristen Lehman also shot 48 with two pars and four bogeys.
Sam Schwartz completed the team score with a 53, and Alleigh Wingler shot 71.

Maddie Graber posted a 61 for the SAHS junior varsity team, which fell to the Saints 241-276.

Runners finish 2nd
FORT WAYNE — South Adams’ cross country team finished second to the Concordia Cadets Tuesday in the small-school division of the Snider Hokum Karem.
The Starfires finished with a total time of 1 hour, 56 minutes, 47 seconds at the event, in which runners compete in co-ed pairs. Concordia, which finished ninth in the state in girls cross country last season, posted a time of 1:52:07.
The duo of Evan Liechty and Hannah Moore turned in the top time for SAHS, finishing in 27:55 for seventh place overall. Brody Shane and Kristen Muselman were 13th in 28:25, and Joel Hawbaker and Jenna Smith placed 25th in 29:25.

Soccer teams fall
The Starfire girls dropped their first game of the season Tuesday, 4-2 to the host Norwell Knights. The boys team fell 5-1 to the host New Haven Bulldogs on Monday.
South Adams fell behind 3-1 in the opening half of the girls game and could not recover. Alaina Johnston scored both of its goals — one in each half — on assists from Rachel Simon and Samantha Sprunger.
Brianna Nevil finished with four saves.
Kyle Glidewell scored the lone goal for the boys team against New Haven.[[In-content Ad]]
