SA opens with victory

BERNE — The Starfires are focused on earning another Allen County Athletic Conference title. They have taken the first step toward that goal.
South Adams High School’s wrestling team opened its season Thursday, fighting off the visiting Garrett Railroaders for a 42-31 victory.
Freshman Gabe Schwartz turned in the fastest victory of the night for the Starfires, winning his match at 170 pounds with a pin in 2 minutes, 43 seconds. Boaz Marbach (138) and Eric Pimentel (132) added pins in 3:20 and 3:57 respectively.
Andrew Beachey (HWT) picked up a shutout victory by a 7-0 score, and Mavrick Morningstar (220) won by a 6-3 decision. SAHS added three other victories by forfeit from Sawyer Miller (113), L.J. Moser (126) and Klayton Hinshaw (182).

Girls basketball wins
MUNCIE — South Adams struggled from the foul line and got shut out in the third quarter, but still picked up a 23-21 win Thursday over the host Burris Owls.
The Starfires (3-3) dominated the first half, holding Burris to one point in the second quarter as they built a 16-5 lead. They went scoreless in the third period, but were still up heading into the final eight minutes and eked out the two-point win.
Dzejna Ahmetovic scored six points to lead South Adams, which shot just 2-of-9 at the free-throw line. Alyssa Bluhm and Sharon Balsiger added five points apiece.

Grace Shymanski was the only player in double figures as she scored 11 points to pace Burris (1-4).

Swimmers unbeaten
ANGOLA — Six swimmers each won two events Thursday as the Starfires stayed undefeated. The boys team topped the Angola Hornets 102-47, and the girls won 96-73.
Two freshmen were key for the South Adams boys as David Steffen took the 50-yard freestyle in 24.72 and the 100 freestyle in 57.39, and Drew LeFever won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:27.6 and the 100 butterfly in 59.91. Cory Sank, one of two seniors on the team, added winning times of 2:05.26 in the 200 freestyle and 5:46.84 in the 500 freestyle.
Sidney Sprunger, a freshman, was one of the double winners for the girls team as she finished first in the 200 individual medley in 2:36.69 and the 100 backstroke in 1:12.43. Cady Farlow was first with times of 2:12.84 in the 200 freestyle and 1:14.53 in the 100 breaststroke, and Kara DeLong won the 50 freestyle in 27.22 and the 100 butterfly in 1:05.42.
Also picking up individual victories for SAHS were Shad Swygart, Daniel Burson and Michaela Rupp.
