SA overcomes errors vs. Bruins

HARTFORD CITY — Errors caused the Starfires some problems. But they had more than enough offense to overcome them.
The South Adams High School baseball team racked up 16 hits Tuesday as it knocked off the host Blackford Bruins 15-8.
The Starfires (9-7) fell behind 2-0 and gave up four unearned runs in the game. However, they took the lead with a three-run third inning, scored four times in the fourth and put the game away with five runs in the top of the seventh.
Collin Affolder, Blake Fox and Corey Seffernick all hit home runs for SAHS. Affolder and Fox each finished with three hits, three RBIs and two runs, and Seffernick totaled three RBIs and three runs. Nick Busse went 3-for-5 with two runs.
Chase Ingle got the win despite allowing six runs on 10 hits, including three home runs, in five innings.

Athletes honored
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery honored several athletes Monday at its scholastic awards banquet.
Sam Tobe and Wade Gelhaus earned the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award  while Alex Thien and Kelsey Fiely were named OHSAA scholar athletes.
Tobe competes in cross country, basketball and track for the Indians while Gelhaus was a member of the boys basketball team. The Griffin award goes to students who “have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship and display ethics and integrity as a student athlete in their school and community.”
The OHSAA scholar athlete award goes to the athletes who have the highest grade point average while earning at least four varsity letters. Fiely has earned eight varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track and carries a 3.8 GPA, and Thien has earned four varsity letters in baseball and has a 4.0 GPA.

Jay to compete
INDIANAPOLIS — The Jay County Special Olympics basketball team has been selected to represent Team Indiana at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games.
“It’s an honor to be chosen to be part of Team Indiana,” said Heidi Bowman, volunteer county coordinator for Special Olympics Indiana, Jay County. “The players have worked so hard this year …”
The Jay County team will compete in the games, which will be held June 14 through 21, 2014, in New Jersey. The squad is made up of Michael Brown, Lucas Burgess, Sam Glessner, Josh Griffin, Conner Hoyt, Jon McGraw, Mark Knipp, Kyle Scott, Ty Weesner and Ethan Wendel.
Special Olympics USA Games are held every four years, and members of Team Indiana are chosen based on results in state tournaments. The Jay County Cavaliers won the Special Olympics Indiana state championship in March.

Bulldogs defeat SA
NEW HAVEN — South Adams’ girls tennis team won two three-set matches Monday, but still suffered a 3-2 loss to the New Haven Bulldogs.

Maddie Graber and Erika Miller won their matches for the Starfires (2-6) at No. 1 and 3 singles respectively by identical scores. They each dropped their first set before rallying to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
Shiana Scott and Brittany Potts also went three sets at No. 2 doubles, but lost 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 to Eryka Kraner and Audrey Fritcha. Holly Taylor and Alyssa Armenta lost 6-2, 6-0 to Jessica Calvert and Taylor Erdly at No. 1 doubles, and Maddy Kloepper fell 6-3, 6-2 to Tyra Bryant at No. 2 singles.
SAHS won the junior varsity match led by a shutout win from Treva Cingenpeel at No. 5 singles.

Tribe drops out
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Fort Recovery baseball team dropped out of the state’s top 10, finishing 13th in this week’s Division IV poll voting by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association.
The Indians (10-7) were ranked seventh in the opening poll of the season, but dropped to 13th in the second poll released Monday. They earned 20 poll points, finishing three behind Columbus Grove and three ahead of Worthington Christian.
Fisher Catholic is ranked 10th with 32 poll points.
Fort Recovery has lost four in a row to Versailles, New Knoxville, Coldwater and Minster.
The Midwest Athletic Conference has four teams ranked in the state’s top 10, with Minster and St. Henry at No. 4 and 5 respectively in Division IV. Coldwater is ranked second in Division III.

Schoenlein leads
Lizzy Schoenlein won a pair of events Monday to lead the host East Jay Middle School girls track team to victory over Norwell and Blackford.
The Chief girls scored 62 points to edge Norwell (59). Blackford scored five points.
The EJMS boys finished second behind Norwell
Schoenlein dominated the sprints for the East Jay girls, winning the 100-meter dash in 13.93 seconds and the 200 dash in 29.5. Britlyn Dues was first with a time of 1 minute, 8.8 seconds, in the 400 dash.
Lucy Laux took the long jump at 12 feet, 10 inches, Rebecca Corwin was first in the shot put at 24 feet, 8 inches, and Taylor Muhlenkamp won in the discus at 70 feet, 4 inches.
Tyler Leonhard matched Muhlenkamp by taking the boys discus with a toss of 111 feet, 5 inches. Gavino Lopez turned in a time of 1:06.4 to win the 400 dash.[[In-content Ad]]
