SA runners 17th in state

TERRE HAUTE — The South Adams High School boys team placed 17th at the IHSAA Cross Country State Championships on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
The Starfires posted a team score of 390, eight points behind 16th place Zionsville.
The top-ranked Carmel Greyhounds and No. 2 Columbus North Bulldogs finished first and second respectively in the 20-team meet. The Greyhounds were crowned champions for the second straight year after ending the Bulldogs’ streak from 2009 through ‘11.
Carmel raced to a team score of 64 points, while Columbus North followed with 78. Carroll (Fort Wayne) was third with 192.
Sawyer Miller was the lead runner for the Stars, crossing the finish line in 16 minutes, 13.2 seconds, for 35th place.
Bailey McIntire finished 48th in 16:52 and posted the best time of the 11 freshmen competing at the state meet.
Terre Haute South’s Jackson Bertoli was the overall winner, finishing in 15:32.
Following Miller and McIntire were Brody Shane (16:52 – 102nd), Daniel Velasco (17:21 – 156th) and Daniel Steffen (17:44 – 179th).
Eighteen of the top 20 ranked teams competed in the state meet, and 15 are from the top 64 schools based on enrollment. South Adams is the only school that finished in the top 20 in the state with an enrollment of fewer than 700 students.
South Adams has an enrollment of 370.
Sutter places 55th
HEBRON, Ohio — Fort Recovery High School senior Elle Sutter capped her prep career with a 55th-place finish Saturday at the OHSAA Division III cross country state meet.
Sutter crossed the finish line in 20:16.81. Brittany Atkinson of Liberty Center was the overall winner, finishing in 18:31. Coldwater’s Christina Seas (18:43) and Columbus Academy’s Julia Rizk (18:48) were second and third respectively.
This was the second time Sutter had competed in the state meet after she qualified as a freshman. She placed 52nd in 2010 with a time of 19:59.[[In-content Ad]]
