SA spikers get 1st victory (09/12/2008)

BLUFFTON - The South Adams High School volleyball team broke through Thursday, picking up their first win of the season 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-14 over the Bluffton Tigers.

Amber Neuenschwander totaled 19 digs, 11 assists and four aces for the Starfires (1-12). Whitney Ellinger slammed home 16 kills and had five blocks, and Karen Bollenbacher added 11 kills and two blocks.

Kassy Potts had 20 digs, and Jacie Yoder put up 20 assists.

South Adams' junior varsity team lost 25-7, 25-14 to the Tigers.

Star golfers top two

WINCHESTER - Alyssa Neuenschwander put together a run during the middle of her round as she shot 43 Thursday and led the South Adams girls golf team to a pair of victories.

The Starfires, who had lost five straight, posted by far their best score of the year with a 193 at Winchester Golf Club. Blackford followed with a 214, and Winchester had a 224.

Neuenschwander caught fire at WGC, starting with a birdie on the par-five fourth hole. She followed with back-to-back pars on the par-5 five and the par-4 sixth, and also had bogeys on the second, third, seventh and eighth holes for a match-medalist score of 43.

Tricia Crider had two pars in her round of 45, and Kara Lehman had one par for a 50. Grace Dobler and Jansen Yoder each shot 55, and Kaytlyn Pierce had a 67.

SA girls soccer rolls

BERNE - South Adams' girls soccer team picked up an 11-3 victory Tuesday over the visiting New Haven Bulldogs.

The Starfires had just a two-goal lead at halftime, but then exploded for eight goals after the intermission.

Ashton Morgan scored four times and had an assist to lead SAHS.

Mackenzie Moser and Chelsey Nevel each scored twice. Kinsey Lengerich, Maddie Moore and Jaci Liechty each added a single goal.

Moore also assisted on four goals, and Liechty, Megan Myers and Katrina Hawkins each added one assist.

SA runners roll

BERNE - The South Adams cross country teams defeated the Woodlan Warriors Tuesday night.

Nathan Rupp won the boys race in 17-minutes, 30 seconds, to lead the Starfires to a 16-39 victory. Hannah Moore was first for the girls team in 21:46 as SAHS won 16-47.

Both South Adams teams swept the top four spots in both races, with Aaron Lehman (17:30) second in the boys race, Gabe Sprunger (18:26) third and Sam Heckard (18:43) in fourth. Allison Beitler (21:46) was second for the girls followed by Taylor Miller (21:51) and Sawyer Shane (21:51).

The junior high girls team won 21-39 with Kristen Muselman first in 12:16. The boys team posted a score of 15 - Woodlan did not have enough runners for a team score - with Evan Liechty winning in 10:38, Brody Shane (10:39) second and Joel Hawbaker third.

FR gridders fall

MINSTER, Ohio - Fort Recovery Middle School's football teams both lost Thursday, the seventh graders by a 22-6 score to the Minster Wildcats and the eighth grade team 35-0.

Alex Wenning had the only score of the day for the Indians, reaching the end zone on an 8-yard run.
