BERNE — Three different Starfires scored Saturday as they halted a five-game losing streak.
South Adams High School’s girls soccer team earned its first victory since August by a 3-1 score over the visiting Lakewood Park Christian Panthers.
The Starfires (3-9), whose last win came Aug. 29 over Muncie Southside, did all of their scoring in the first half. Alaina Johnston got them on the board first on a goal off an assist from Rachel Simon.
Samantha Sprunger assisted as Simon scored the second goal for SAHS, and then Simon notched her second assist on a goal by Sharon Balsiger.
The lone goal of the game for Lakewood Park Christian came on a penalty kick in the second half.
Johnston finished with seven saves in the victory, and Jordan Brown had two.

Runners finish fifth
FORT WAYNE — The South Adams boys cross country team finished fifth out of 24 teams in the West Noble Invitational Saturday at IPFW, and the girls team was eighth out of 21.
Evan Liechty led the Starfires with a time of 16:30 for seventh in the boys competition, which No. 11 Homestead won by 23 points over 13th-ranked Snider. Brody Shane was 15th for SAHS ahead of Joel Hawbaker (33rd – 17:25), Simon Sprunger (55th – 17:59) and Cody Sprunger (70th – 18:16).
Hannah Moore turned in a time of 20:14 to pace the South Adams girls in ninth place. Kristen Muselman was 20th in 20:46) followed by Aleesha Goodwin (62nd – 22:06), Jenna Smith (64th – 22:08) and Allison Amstutz (73rd – 22:27).

Boys soccer blanked
BERNE — The struggles continued for the Starfires Saturday as they suffered their seventh straight shutout loss, falling 11-0 to the Lakewood Park Christian Panthers.
South Adams gave up five goals in the first half, including a pair to Zac Crosby. Also scoring twice for Lakewood Park Christian in the game were Brooks Gerke, Hunter Yoder and Zach Herber.
The Starfires’ last win came by an 8-2 score Aug. 29 over Muncie Southside, and they have been outscored 37-0 since.

SAMS girls fifth
FORT WAYNE — South Adams’ middle school girls cross country placed fifth out of 27 teams at Saturday’s West Noble Invitational at IPFW. The Starfires did not have enough boys runners for a team score.
Olivia Von Gunten powered the girls team with a 14th-place finish in 12 minutes, one second. Kara Seffernick took 23rd in 12:15 followed by Hannah Coates (25th – 12:19), Lauren Klaehn (49th – 12:49) and Julia Grabau (67th – 13:07).
Jared Ford had the top time for the short-handed boys team in 65th at 11:44. Trailing him were Paul Neuenschwander (162nd – 13:17), Wyatt Miller (165th – 13:21) and Briar Goodwin (179th – 13:53).[[In-content Ad]]
