SA stumbles in overtime

BERNE - There was a four-point lead with less than two minutes to go in regulation, and a two-point lead early in overtime. The Starfires were unable to hold on to either of them.

After scoring the first two points of the extra session Tuesday, the South Adams High School boys basketball team gave up nine unanswered points in a 72-65 overtime loss to the visiting Union City Indians.

Three Union City players broke the 20-point mark, with Gary Williams leading the team with 22 points. Tyler Mote scored 21 points, and Frankie Candiano had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Indians (6-8).

Nick Teeter totaled 22 points and nine rebounds for the Starfires (1-12), who have lost 11 in a row. Chase Ingle had 17 points, Taylor LeFever had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Dustin Wanner dished out seven assists.

South Adams won the junior varsity game 44-30 behind 12 points each from Mark Muselman and Ben Meshberger.

Chiefs defeat Delta

East Jay Middle School's girls basketball teams closed their seasons with victories Tuesday. The eighth graders clobbered Delta 29-6 while the seventh grade team earned a 16-12 win.

Katlin Petro, Mikayla Gross and Katie Aker each scored six points to lead the eighth Chiefs (13-3), who shut out Delta in the second quarter and had a 16-1 lead at halftime. Abby Dunlavy added four points.

Breanne McIntire totaled seven points for the seventh grade team (14-2), which outscored the Eagles 7-3 in the fourth quarter. Lucy Hemmelgarn finished with six points.

WJMS grapplers fall

DUNKIRK - The West Jay wrestling team earned five pins Tuesday, but fell 45-42 to visiting Union City Westside.

Zach Hyer (175) scored the quickest pin of the night for the Eagles as he won in just 51 seconds. Other pins came from Coby Green (100), Bryce Bantz (105), Chaz McClain (135) and Mitch Bennett (HWT).

Fort girls lose

ST. HENRY, Ohio - Fort Recovery's eighth grade girls basketball team lost 24-13 Tuesday to the St. Henry Redskins.

Lexi Schmitz scored seven points for the Indians, who dropped to 3-10. Kelsee Ontrop added four points.

SA wrestlers win

HARTFORD CITY - The South Adams Middle School wrestling team clobbered Hartford City 92-6 Tuesday.

The Starfires record seven pins in less than one minute, including a win by Brandon Hough (125) in just 12 seconds. Other quick pins came from Matt Nussbaum (85), Quinn Dailey (120), Austin Grabau (135), Eric Pimentel (140), Kyle Kilsby (171) and Mason Morningstar (215).

Ryan Ford (90), Sawyer Miller (95), Clayton Rhoades (105), Derek Wanner (115), Boaz Marbach (100), Collin Affolder (130) and Maverick Morningstar (250) also added pins for South Adams.

Austin Michel (145) added a 16-0 technical fall, and Klayton Hinshaw (152) won by a 4-2 decision.

EJ 6th grade rallies

The East Jay sixth grade girls basketball team rallied for a 20-18 victory Tuesday over Yorktown.

Gabby Hart led the Chiefs with 10 points as they outscored Yorktown 10-4 in the second half. Cheyenne Loy and Abby Wendel each scored four points.

In the B team game, East Jay lost 18-14 with Syndey Robbins scoring a team-high seven points.[[In-content Ad]]
