SA wins, Jay falls on sparse hitting night (04/19/07)

Baseball/softball roundup

BERNE and HUNTINGTON - Hits were hard to come by Wednesday night.

That boded well for the South Adams softball team, but was not such a good thing for Jay County.

The host Starfires managed just three hits, but took advantage of a multitude of errors in a 11-0, five-inning win over the Randolph Southern Rebels. The Class 4A No. 5 Huntington North Vikings no-hit visiting Jay County as the Patriots fell 2-0.

There were just seven hits in the two games combined.

Amber Melick and Kayla Minnich combined on a one-hitter for South Adams (4-1). Melick got the win, recording 10 of her 12 outs by way of the strikeout.

Lindsay Batt powered the Starfire offense with a double and two runs. Anne Lehman singled and scored twice, Ashton Morgan had a hit, a run and an RBI and Jana Beitler scored two runs.

Jay County dropped to 2-3 as it took on the tough task of trying to bat against Viking ace Katie Hackney. She went the distance, racking up 18 strike outs without giving up a hit or a walk.

Shae Keller turned in a solid effort for the Patriots, allowing just three hits. Only one of the two runs against her was earned as she walked four and struck out three.

JC hands Scots 1st loss

ANDERSON - Jay County's junior varsity baseball team won a battle of the unbeatens Wednesday, handing the Anderson Highland Scots an 8-4 defeat.

Highland entered the game at 4-0, but the Patriots (3-0) took control with a four-run third inning. They extended their lead to 8-2 in the top of the seventh before the Scots scored twice in the bottom of the frame for the final margin.

Colton Lombardo smashed two doubles to lead the JCHS offense. He also scored a run.

Michael Daniels singled and scored twice, and Tyler Freyburgher had two hits, including a double and a run.

Phil Powell pitched 62/3 innings for the win, allowing four runs - three earned - on eight hits and three walks. He struck out four batters before turning the ball over to Daniels for the final out.

Knights crush Fort

The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team gave up four first-inning runs and never recovered in a 15-1 loss Tuesday to the Crestview Knights.

Crestview tacked on eight runs in the third inning as it knocked around four different Tribe pitchers and took advantage of three errors. Jordan Hess suffered the loss, giving up six runs - five earned - on five hits in 21/3 innings.

Brady Kahlig had two of the five hits for the Indians (0-5). Hess scored their only run.

Tribe softball drops 2

Out-hitting the Celina Bulldogs by three Monday and being out-hit by 19 Tuesday against the Parkway Panthers yielded the same result for the Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team. The Indians ended up on the short end of the score in both games, losing 10-5 to Celina and 36-2 to Parkway.

Josie Guggenbiller gave up 10 runs - eight earned - on eight hits and three walks in the loss to the Bulldogs. Bekah Brunswick was tagged for 21 hits by the Panthers, but 24 of their 36 runs were unearned.

Carly Staugler led the Tribe offense with two hits and two RBIs in Monday's loss. Betsy Tobe had two hits, one run and one RBI.
