Safety event set Saturday (9/21/05)

The West Jay Optimist Club will host the Annual Tri-Star Safety Event on Saturday in Dunkirk.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on the Westlawn Elementary School grounds.

Sgt. Rod Russell from the Indiana State Police will discuss proper signaling and roadway safety.

Local fire department representatives will discuss proper preparation and precautions in the event of a fire. Local EMT representatives will explain what to do in an accident or tragic situation.

There will also be an obstacle course set up for children to practice bicycle safety. There will be many prizes and a bike will be given away.

Corrections

Steve Arnold, noted in Tuesday’s Taking Note column, who was sent to Houston with the American Red Cross is an agent with the Portland Insurance Agency. He was also sent to Houston for 14 days instead of seven.

Also Graphic Printing, Portland, is not a sponsor of the Child and Adult Care Food Program. It is sponsored by the Early Childhood Alliance, serving Jay and surrounding counties.

Dean’s list

Jonetta Stevens, Portland, has been named to the 2005 spring dean’s list at Ivy Tech Community College-Wabash Valley Region.

Jay representative

Sgt. Eric Hough, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, was recently appointed U.S. Army respresentative for the Portland, Winchester, and Union City areas. He works out of the Army’s Muncie recruiting station at 1403 W. McGalliard Road.

Botanical brown bag

Bring a sandwich and stop at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory in Fort Wayne on Thursday. An entertaining “gardening moment” will be held from noon until 1 p.m.

The program fee is $4 for adults. Gardening moments will be held the last Thursday of each month.
