SAHS defeats Cavaliers

FORT WAYNE — The Starfire offense got going after a slow start.
South Adams High School’s softball team scored once in the fourth and fifth innings and twice in the sixth Monday in a 4-1 victory over the host Canterbury Cavaliers.
Canterbury scored its only run in the first inning before Alyssa Bluhm and Loren Sparks combined to shut it down the rest of the way. Bluhm got the win as she gave up one run on four hits in five innings, and Sparks tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
Alexis Ford paced South Adams by going 2-for-4 with a run. Rachel Hirschy had a hit and an RBI, and Brandy Rodgers and Olivia Turner each added a hit and a run.
Netters win fourth
HARTFORD CITY — The South Adams girls tennis team picked up its fourth win of the year Monday as it topped the host Blackford Bruins 4-1.
Brittany Potts led the effort for the Starfires (4-8) as she cruised past Ashley Hall 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Erika Miller added a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Elizabeth Mattson in the No. 2 singles match.
Holly Taylor and Maddie Graber rallied from a first-set loss at No. 1 doubles to beat Justine Ickes and Hope Milles 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 2 doubles match, Shiana Scott and Alyssa Armenta defeated Cate Anderson and Sabrina Peters 6-1, 6-4.
Maddy Kloepper dropped the No. 1 singles match 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to Rachael Baker.
SAHS also won the junior varsity match 10-1.
Baseball loses
CHURUBUSCO — The Starfires rallied from a nine-run deficit, but their comeback came up a run shot Monday as they fell 10-9 to the Churubusco Eagles.
South Adams fell behind when Churubusco scored five times in the third inning and four in the fourth. It put up eight runs in the final three innings only to fall by one.
Blake Fox took the loss, giving up four runs — six earned — on seven hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Fox paced the SAHS offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. Corey Seffernick added two hits, including a double, and three runs, and Collin Affolder went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run.[[In-content Ad]]
