BERNE — After an 0-5 start, the Starfires have come on strong.
The South Adams High School girls soccer team won seven of its final 11 games, and four of its final five, closing the regular-season Saturday with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Manchester Squires.
Samantha Sprunger scored two of the three goals for the Starfires (7-9), who will host Concordia in sectional quarterfinal action at 5 p.m. Tuesday. She came up with a score off of an assist from Rachel Simon in the first half, and added a second goal on a pass from Olivia Turner after the intermission.
Simon also scored a goal in the first half off of an assist from Jasmin Thuerich. She leads the team in goals this season with 13.
Sophomore goalie Alaina Johnston racked up 23 saves for her third shutout in the last five games.
Garrett tops football
MUNCIE — The Starfires gave up 21 third-quarter points and turned the ball over five times Saturday at BSU’s Scheumann Stadium on the way to a 42-14 loss to the Garrett Railroaders.
Noah Follett paced Garrett (6-1) against the Starfires (1-6), who beat Adams Central 46-21 at Ball State in 2010 for their first victory of the year and went on to win six straight before falling in the sectional championship game. He ran for TDs of 10, 1 and 15 yards, and tossed a 26-yard TD pass to Drake Landes.
Derek Wanner ran 17 times for 66 yards for South Adams. Isaiah Amstutz and Drew LeFever each added TD runs.
Boys soccer loses
BERNE — South Adams couldn’t overcome a three-goal halftime deficit at home Saturday as it fell 4-2 to the Manchester Squires.
Dustin Dellinger scored his eighth goal in the last five games for the Starfires (3-12-1) of an assist from senior L.J. Moser in the second half. Marco Vasquez also scored on a 30-yard shot off of an assist from Shad Swygart.
Chance Sprunger, Cameron Lengerich, Lathan Luginbill and Vasquez each took two shots on goal for the Starfires, who will open sectional play against Heritage at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Blackhawk Christian.
