SAHS defeats Tigers

BLUFFTON — With their leading scorer done for the season because of a knee injury, the Starfires needed a sectional spark.
Sharon Balsiger was there to provided it.
Balsiger poured in a career-high 20 points Tuesday to lead the South Adams High School girls basketball team to a 41-37 victory over the Bluffton Tigers in their opening game of the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament.
With Dzejna Ahmetovic out of the season with a knee injury, Balsiger led the attack as the Starfires (8-12) outscored Bluffton at the free-throw line 13-6. She shot 8-of-11 from the foul line.
Alyssa Bluhm and Lauren Smith followed with nine and seven points respectively for SAHS, which matched the 2008-09 squad for the most wins in the last decade.
Marissa Castano scored 12 points for Bluffton.
South Adams advances to play Churubusco (3-17) in the semifinal round at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Bader breaks record
OSSIAN — Alex Bader broke a team record and won two events Tuesday to lead the Jay County middle school girls swim team to a third-place finish at the Norwell Invitational.
Bader set a new team mark in the 100-yard individual medley, as she won in 1 minute, 3.58 seconds. Anne Vormohr held the previous record of 103.9.
She also finished first in the 100 freestyle. She teamed with Sydney Mathias, Jamie Valentine and Kaitlyn Dow for first place in the medley relay and joined Elizabeth McDowell, Dow and Mathias in winning the 300 freestyle relay.
Mathias added a victory in the 400 freestyle and was also the runner-up in the 200 freestyle. Valentine picked up the other Jay County victory in the 100 breaststroke.

Grapplers stumble
Jay County’s middle school wrestling teams both suffered losses at home Tuesday.

The East Jay squad fell 51-36 to Driver (Winchester) while West Jay lost 58-12 to South Adams.
The Chiefs picked up five victories, all of which came by way of pins. Earning wins were Davis Anderson (80), Ivan Hemmelgarn (110), Tyler Leonhard (152), Gaven Hare (160) and Austin Harter (HWT).
West Jay got a pair of pins, with Konner Rodeffer (152) finishing off his match in 1 minute, 51 seconds. Nick Lykins (125) added a victory in 2:17.
Adding exhibition wins were Derek Bryan, Caleb Chenoweth, Kevin Myers, Daniel Ostrowski and Jacob Ferguson for East Jay and Andrew Levasseur for the Eagles.

Muhlenkamp leads
MUNCIE — Kendra Muhlenkamp had another big night Tuesday as she led the East Jay sixth grade girls basketball team to a 46-24 victory over Muncie Northside.
Muhlenkamp, who had 14 points in Monday’s win over Blackford, racked up 20 to power the Chiefs past Northside. Maggie Pryor and Kailee Denney followed with six points apiece.
Gwen Omstead scored 10 points to lead the EJMS B team to a 34-20 victory.

WJMS boys fall
UNION CITY — The West Jay sixth grade boys basketball team suffered a 44-38 loss Tuesday to host Westside.
Wyatt Geesaman finished with 17 points as the Eagles slipped to 5-4. Gabe Faulkner was right behind Geesaman with 16 points.
West Jay won the B team game 25-21 with Andrew Toney scoring 10 points.
