NORTH MANCHESTER — Defense kept the Starfires in contention early, but they weren’t able to hold the home team in check beyond the opening quarter.
South Adams High School’s girls basketball team trailed just 4-2 after the first period, but gave up 22 second-quarter points Thursday on the way to a 52-33 loss to the host Manchester Squires.
Dzejna Ahmetovic finished with 10 points, 11 rebound and three blocks as the Starfires (3-16) dropped their seventh straight game. Allison Amstutz, Lyndsey Chandler and Alaina Johnston added five points apiece.
Johnston also had four rebounds and three steals, and Kristen Muselman totaled three steals and three assists.
In the junior varsity game, Mackenzie Jennings scored eight points as the Starfires, who went scoreless in the first half, fell 41-15.

Chief grapplers roll
BERNE — The East Jay Middle School wrestling team dominated the host South Adams Starfires 51-15 Thursday.
East Jay racked up 10 victories, nine of which came by way of pins. Kaimen Sanders (82), Henry Hemmelgarn (87), Colten Compton (92), Brent Englehardt (102), A.J. Bryan (107), Mitchell Bruggeman (112), Matt Blackford (137), Levi Hummel (147) and Nick Lairson (154) all turned in pins for the Chiefs.
Ivan Hemmelgarn (97) won by a 9-5 decision.

Eagle wrestlers fall

HARTFORD CITY — West Jay’s wrestling team suffered losses Thursday of 67-30 to Union City and 27-24 to host Hartford City.
Three wrestlers each picked up victories in both matches, with Jacob Geesaman (85), Dallas Dudelston (115) and Donald Carty (180) each turning in two pins.
Matt Partlow (200) had a pin against Union City, and Skylar Johnson (120) won by pin versus Hartford City.

EJ slam Montpelier
A balanced scoring effort powered the East Jay sixth grade boys basketball team to a 44-4 victory Thursday over Montpelier.
Caleb Manor, Grant Keihn and Angel Perez each finished with eight points to lead the Chiefs. Collin Haynes followed with six points.
In the B team game, Jason Minnich and Christopher McDowell each had six points in a 28-9 win.

West Jay 6th rolls
DUNKIRK — The West Jay sixth grade boys basketball team cruised to a 39-17 victory Thursday over Hartford City.
The Eagles improved to 6-2 behind eight points from Cole Stigleman. Blade McEwen, Max Moser and Holton Hill added six points apiece.
In the B team game, Austin Schlosser scored six points to lead WJMS to a 19-13 win.[[In-content Ad]]
