SAHS earns 10th victory

BERNE — The Starfires’ 10th win was never in doubt.
South Adams High School’s boys tennis team posted four first-set shutouts Tuesday on the way to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Wayne Generals.
Brayden Myers completed his shutout 6-0, 6-0 over Trey Lohman at No. 2 singles, and the team of J.D. Tarr and Jon Steffen won by the same score over Brandon Barker and Ken Otis at No. 2 doubles. Jared Rife picked up a victory in the No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-1 over Davon Crutchfield, and Mark Muselman topped Joevonn Timberlake 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
The only close game of the night came in the first at No. 1 doubles, but Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz of the Starfires (10-5) fought off Josh Boehm and Kyle Sullivan and went on to a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

Runners win big
BLUFFTON — The South Adams cross country teams cruised past the Bluffton Tigers, with the boys winning 16-46 Tuesday and the boys posting an 18-49 victory.
Evan Liechty crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 55 seconds to finish first for the Starfire boys. Brody Shane followed in 18:58 for second place with Simon Sprunger and Joel Hawbaker, both with times of 19:53, in third and fourth respectively.
Kristen Muselman won the girls race by a second over teammate Hannah Moore in 24:49. Jenna Smith was third in 24:51, and Allison Amstutz placed fourth in 25:18.

Garrett tops spikers
BERNE — The Starfires’ volleyball team bounced back from a tough opening game, but couldn’t keep the momentum going Tuesday in a 25-10, 23-25, 25-17, 25-12 loss to the visiting Garrett Railroaders.

Alyssa Bluhm did it all for South Adams (6-14), racking up 16 digs, 14 kills and 10 assists in the defeat. Lily Taing had 19 assists, seven digs and four kills, and Lauren Smith finished with 24 digs.
Mackenzie Jennings totaled 11 digs, seven assists and two aces in the junior varsity Starfires’ 24-25, 25-15, 15-7 loss.

Seffernick leads
BLUFFTON — Kara Seffernick set the pace for the South Adams Middle School girls cross country team Tuesday in a 15-50 victory over the Bluffton Tigers. The boys did not have enough runners for a team score.
Seffernick dominated the girls race, in which the Starfires swept the top five, winning by more than 30 seconds in 12:11. Hannah Coates was second in 12:43 ahead of teammates Olivia Von Gunten (13:02), Lauren Klaehn (13:21) and Julia Grabau (13:44).
Jared Ford was the top runner for the boys team in second place with a time of 12:03. Wyatt Miller was sixth in 13:20 ahead of Briar Goodwin (seventh – 13:40) and Paul Neuenschwander (eighth – 14:27).

Leo tops MS football
BERNE — The Leo Lions grabbed leads in the first quarter of both football games Tuesday, defeating the South Adams eighth graders 32-14 and seventh graders 47-0.
Drew LeFever finished with 112 yards on 11 carries, including an 80-yard TD run, for the eighth grade team (1-3, 1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference), which trailed 18-8 after the first quarter. Drew Pollard scored on a 54-yard pass from Justin Nussbaum, and Matt Hilton made four tackles.
Blade Zeitvogel had 13 carries for 68 yards for the Starfire seventh graders, who gave up two first-quarter touchdowns. Corbin Swygart paced the defense with seven tackles.[[In-content Ad]]
