SAHS earns 1st win

FORT WAYNE — Alyssa Armenta and Shiana Scott were perfect Saturday as they helped lead the Starfires to their first victory.
The South Adams High School girls tennis team halted a three-match, season-opening losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the North Side Redskins. The Starfires dropped the second half of their doubleheader 4-1 to the host South Side Archers.
Scott and Armenta turned in a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Mariah Kiefer and Mary Reynolds of North Side at No. 2 doubles. They also topped South Side’s Thein Aye and Cassie Piffieriti 6-1, 4-6 (10-7) for their third straight win.
The other two wins for the Starfires (1-4) against the Redskins went three sets. Erika Miller knocked off Syahirah Aziz 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Jennifer Potts defeated Kyonnia Jackson-Freeman 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Jay 4th at relays
MUNCIE — Jay County’s boys track team scored 64 points Saturday to finish fourth out of eight teams at the Muncie Relays. They trailed Kokomo (98), Huntington North (83) and Muncie Central (78).
Tyler Back and Zane Shreve picked up the only victories for the Patriots. Back finished first in the shot put at 49 feet, 9 inches, and Shreve took the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.3 seconds.
Andrew Eley placed second in the discus with a toss of 135 feet, 10 inches, and Cade Price was the runner-up with a leap of 6 feet even in the high jump. Dylan Cope was also second in the 1,600 run.
Jalen Ryder, Willie Skiver, Wil Rowles and Cope teamed to take third place in the 4x800 relay.

Mitchel wins shot
MINSTER, Ohio — Twins Hannah and Leah Mitchel went one-two in the shot put Saturday as the South Adams girls track team finished eighth out of 12 squads at the Minster Memorial Invitational. The Starfire boys were eighth out of 14 teams.
The Mitchels were the only athletes to clear the 35-foot mark in the girls shot put, with Hannah winning at 37 feet, ¼ inch. Leah was the runner-up with a toss of 36 feet, 3 inches.
Leah Mitchel was also third at 99 feet, 7 inches, in the discus.
Cam Lengerich turned in the top effort for the boys team, finishing as the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.88 seconds. He placed fourth in the 300 hurdles.

SA baseball splits
BERNE — The South Adams baseball team dominated Saturday’s opener 13-3 in five innings, but settled for a split against the visiting Eastern Comets as it dropped the second game 10-5.
Corey Seffernick hit a home run to lead the offensive onslaught in the first game, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Blake Fox had two hits and three runs for the Starfires (6-5), who scored six times in the fourth inning.
Alex Augsberger went the distance for the win, striking out four batters while allowing three runs — two earned — on six hits and three walks.
Chase Ingle suffered the loss in the second game, allowing six runs — five earned — on eight hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings. Eric Pimentel had a hit, a run and an RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
