SAHS falls in overtime

GARRETT — In 94 minutes, the Starfires were unable to break through.
The South Adams High School girls soccer team suffered an elongated shutout Thursday, falling 1-0 to the Garrett Railroaders in overtime. It marked the third time the team has been blanked this season.
The Starfires (0-5), who have been shut out three times, played Garrett to a scoreless tie through regulation and the first seven-minute overtime period. The Railroaders scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period, and then held SAHS scoreless the rest of the way to avoid a penalty-kick shootout.
Rachel Simon and Samantha Sprunger each took five shots on goal for the Starfires. Michaela Rupp added two.
Alaina Johnston finished with 20 saves.

’Dogs top netters
BERNE — South Adams’ boys tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision Thursday to the New Haven Bulldogs. The team also lost 5-0 Wednesday to Norwell.
Dexter Miller picked up the only victory for the Starfires against New Haven, rallying from a first-set loss to defeat Braedan Holle 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 singles. Brayden Myers fell 6-2, 7-5 to A.J. Smith at No. 1 singles, and Blake Baumer lost 6-1, 6-1 to Ethan Heckley at No. 3.
Jared Rife and Landon Lehman dropped the No. 1 doubles match 6-3, 7-5 to Luke Shoemaker and Dakota Rossman. Dylan Pierce and Cole Myers fell 6-0, 6-4 to Zach Fritcha and Drew Saver at No. 2 doubles.
Myers played the closest match Wednesday against Norwell, dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Tanner Mathews at No. 1 singles.


Boys soccer falls
BERNE — The Starfires couldn’t keep up with the Eastside Blazers in the second half Thursday as they fell 4-2.
The game was tied at one goal apiece at halftime, but Eastside scored three second-half goals, including two from Jared Yoder, to pull away. Dylan Ervin scored the other goal for the Blazers in the second half, and Kyle Franz found the net in the first.
Dustin Dellinger was in on both goals for SAHS (0-3-1), scoring in the first half on an assist from L.J. Moser and assisting on a goal by Lathan Luginbill in the second. Marco Vasquez also assisted on the Luginbill score.
John O’Donnell and Dellinger each finished with four shots on goal, and Dellinger added three. Moser came up with 15 saves.

Spikers lose in 3
BERNE — The South Adams volleyball team could not slow down the visiting Bellmont Squaws Thursday as it suffered a 25-8, 25-10, 25-9 defeat.
Alyssa Bluhm led the way with six assists and four kills for the Starfires, who dropped to 1-8. Cady Farlow had five kills, and Hannah Mitchel totaled four digs.
SAHS dropped both the junior varsity and freshman matches in two games.[[In-content Ad]]
