SAHS falls to the Railroaders

BERNE — An early deficit proved too much to overcome.
The South Adams High School girls basketball team fell behind in the first quarter Saturday as it fell 46-30 to the visiting Garrett Railroaders.
The Starfires (4-7, 1-3 Allen County Athletic Conference) trailed by seven at the end of the first quarter and managed just four points in the second as they trailed by 13 at halftime. They closed the gap to single digits in the third quarter before running out of gas in the fourth.
Brandi Dawson dominated the game for Garrett (7-4, 3-1 ACAC) as she buried 10 field goals and finished with 24 points. Kaitlin Wisel joined her in double figures for the Railroaders with 10 points.
Alyssa Bluhm and Dzejna Ahmetovic shared the team high of eight points for SAHS. Sharon Balsiger and Lauren Smith added five points apiece.
South Adams also dropped the junior varsity game, 20-18.

JC wrestlers fifth
MONTICELLO — Jay County’s wrestling team, which is ranked 16th in the state, finished fifth out of eight squads Saturday at the Twin Lakes Invitational.
The Patriots, who were coming off back-to-back wins at the Spencer Haworth Invitational and the Delta Duals, scored 165 points to finish 7.5 points ahead of the sixth-place host Indians and 19 behind fourth-place Riley (South Bend). Delphi won with 226 points.

Junior Eric Hemmelgarn (HWT), who is ranked second in the state, and senior Kyle Garringer (195), who is ranked sixth, each won the invitational championship in their weight class to lead JCHS. Hunter Gillette (182) finished as the runner-up.
Zach Metcalf (160) added a third place finish, and Alex Abbott (113) was fourth.

Tribe girls roll
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team cruised to a 27-14 victory Saturday over St. Marys. The seventh graders won 26-21 to stay undefeated.
Jocie Kaiser tallied 13 points to lead the FRMS eighth graders (3-2), who were up by 10 at the half. Whitney Will was right behind her with 12 points.
Claire Metzger finished with 11 points to lead the Indian seventh grade team, which improved to 5-0. Carley Stone followed with eight points.
