SAHS girls earn 10th win

BLUFFTON - Three athletes picked up two wins apiece Tuesday as the South Adams High School girls track team ran its record to 10-1 by defeating Heritage and Bluffton.

The Starfires racked up 94 points, more than doubling Heritage (43) and the host Tigers (19). The SAHS boys finished second with 50 points behind Heritage (71) and in front of Bluffton (35).

Allison Beitler keyed another dominant distance effort for the South Adams girls with wins in the 800-meter dash in 2 minutes, 38 seconds and the 1,600 in 5:49. Trisha Myers was first in the high jump at 5 feet even and the 300 hurdles in 51.2, and Leah Mitchel was first in the shot put and discus with throws of 29 feet, 7 inches and 83 feet, 10 inches respectively.

Roman Smith picked up two of the three victories for the Starfire boys (9-2), taking the 110 hurdles in 15.3 and the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.7.

Other wins for the girls team came from Bailee Green (100 dash), Grace Dobler (400 dash), Jaci Liechty (200 dash) and Hannah Moore (3,200 run). Tim Lehman was first in the 400 dash for the boys team.

Baseball falls by 1

GARRETT - The Starfires fell just short Tuesday, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Garrett Railroaders.

South Adams (5-7) led 3-2 after scoring twice in the top of the fifth inning, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the frame. It pulled even again in the top of the sixth, only to have the Railroaders plate the winning run in the bottom.

Dustin Wanner doubled and drove in a pair of runs in the defeat, and John Striker had a double and a run. Gabe Sprunger, Caleb Sprunger and Taylor Smith each scored once.

Smith suffered the loss in relief, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in two innings.

SAHS also lost 8-1 at home Monday to the Blackford Bruins.

Girls tennis loses

BERNE - South Adams' girls tennis team dropped to 1-10 on the year Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to the visiting Huntington North Vikings.

Amber Neuenschwander and Kassy Potts rolled through their match at No. 1 doubles, defeating Kourtney Brubaker and Stephanie Goebbert 6-1, 6-1. And Tori Kistler also turned in a big victory, cruising past Taryn Wuensch 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

In other singles matches, Sarah Muselman lost 6-3, 6-3 to Abby Berry at No. 2 and Alex Fox fell 6-4, 6-3 to Brittany Stephan at No. 3. In the No. 2 doubles match, Lindsey Graber and Aine O'Donnell suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Jericho Parrett and Lisa Daronatsy.

The SAHS junior varsity team lost 6-1 with the team of Kellie Howell and Mallory Eicher turning in the only win.

Softball blanked

GARRETT - The Starfires managed just four hits on the way to a 10-0, five-inning loss to the Garrett Railroaders.

Garrett scored seven runs in the first inning on the way to the victory.

Katrina Hawkins took the loss for South Adams (5-6, 1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference), giving up nine runs - five earned - on nine hits and two walks in four innings.

Lindsey Chandler finished 2-for-2 for the Starfires. Brianna Nevil and Karen Bollenbacher each had one hit.[[In-content Ad]]
