SAHS girls fall to Adams Central (01/29/07)

MONROE - A difficult second quarter helped finish off a winless conference season for the South Adams girls basketball team Saturday.

The Starfires were close after the opening period, but got outscored by 11 points in the second period in a 69-57 loss to the Adams Central Jets.

Adams Central (6-11, 3-4 ACAC) were up 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Jets proceeded to keep their offense rolling with 19-second quarter points while limiting South Adams (3-14, 0-7 ACAC) to just eight and went on to the double-digit win.

Denise Lehman led Adams Central to the victory with 15 points, seven of which came from the foul line. Kayla Foreman added 12 points.

Kayla Coblentz of South Adams led all scorers with 16 points, which included three 3-pointers. She also had five assists and three steals.

Holly Kaup went 6-of-8 from the field for 12 points. Andrea Moser grabbed 14 rebounds, Jodie Muhlenkamp finished with 10 boards and Katie Nichols matched Coblentz with five assists.

Karen Bollenbacher had eight points as the junior varsity team lost 34-27.

Chief 7th takes title

East Jay Middle School's seventh grade boys basketball team won as hosts of the EJMS/Boomer Invitational Saturday while the eighth graders finished third.

The Chief seventh graders defeated Monroe Central 35-27 in the opening round, then drilled Blackhawk Christian 39-20 in the finals. The EJMS eighth grade squad dropped its opener 42-26 to Richmond Test before bouncing back for a 29-15 win over West Jay in the consolation game.

Dillon Ainsworth led the seventh grade Chiefs in both games, scoring 12 points in the championship game and 10 in the opener. Matt Landfair matched him wtih 12 against Blackhawk Christian, and Andy Haffner was second with nine versus Monroe Central.

East Jay 6th still perfect

The perfect season continued for the East Jay Middle School sixth grade girls basketball team as it also walked away with the title at the EJMS/Boomer Invitational.

The Chiefs defeated Monroe Central 31-19 in their opener, then defeated Connersville 32-21 to improve to take the championship.

Rachelle Jackson and Emily DeVoe each scored 10 points to lead East Jay, which is now 6-0. Gabie Cross had eight rebounds, Jackson came up with four steals and Lexie Gierhart dished out three assists.

Hannah Ainsworth had eight points agianst Monroe Central, followed by DeVoe and Gierhart with six apiece. DeVoe also had five steals, and Gierhart finished with three assists. Hudson grabbed eight rebounds, and Makayla Jobe added six.

WJ tops Indians

The West Jay Middle School sixth grade boys basketball team scored a 25-19 victory Wednesday over the Union City Indians.

Tyler Back set the pace for the Eagles as he scored 14 points. Jason Farmer added seven points, and Clayton Scott scored four.

Colton McCallister scored six points in the B team's 25-10 loss.

East Jay wins two

Vince Garcia came up with two quick pins as the East Jay Middle School wrestling team defeated the Wes-Del Warriors 78-15 and West Jay 69-24 last week.

Garcia finished off his 135-pound matches in less than a minute against both teams, winning in 32 seconds against Wes-Del and 53 against West Jay.

Adding pins against Wes-Del were Nick Leonhard (110), Dyllan Derrickson (115), Kyle Davidson (120), Cody Bellis (125) and Andre Duke (152). Winners by fall against West Jay were Austin Bentz (100), Chandler Stout (105), Kyle Davidson (120), Justin Wygant (145) and Lucas Boyer (225).

Nathan Frisch (175) added a 9-4 victory against West Jay, and Ed Muhlenkamp (100) won his junior varsity match in 23 seconds.[[In-content Ad]]
