SAHS hires two coaches

BERNE — A pair of Starfire girls teams will be under new leadership next season.
At its meeting Tuesday, the South Adams School Board hired Brett Freeman to coach girls basketball and Amie Sprunger to coach volleyball at South Adams High School.
Freeman, who played college basketball at Taylor University - Fort Wayne, has coached at Eastside for the last seven years, compiling a record of 46-102. The Blazers were 4-18 last season.
He will be the fifth different Starfire coach in the last six years, taking over after Ryan Cunningham went 3-18 in his lone season at the helm.
Sprunger will lead the volleyball program after coaching the South Adams seventh grade team each of the last two years. She is a 2006 graduate of Adams Central, where she played for a pair of Flying Jet teams that advanced to the state finals.
Ashley Buckingham led the Starfires for four seasons, finishing 10-20 in 2011.

Bader, Vormohr lead
CELINA, Ohio — Alex Bader was the only triple winner Tuesday, Anne Vormohr added a record-breaking effort for the Jay County Summer Swim Team in a 336.5-271.5 win over Celina.
Vormohr won the 13-14-year-old girls short freestyle in 28.6 seconds, edging the record set by her sister and coach, Cori, by just six hundredths of a second. She also won the backstroke.
Bader, Vormohr’s cousin, finished first in the 11-12-year-old girls long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.

Each of her sisters added two wins apiece with Mara taking the 8-and-younger freestyle and butterfly, Eliza finishing first in the 9-10-year-old short freestyle and long freestyle and Sophie earning victories in the 13-14-year-old butterfly and breaststroke.
Audrey Shreve took the top spot in the 11-12-year-old girls short freestyle and breaststroke, and Katy Smeltzer won the 15-and-older girls short freestyle and butterfly.

Eels move to 2-0
COLDWATER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery Eels summer swim team improved to 2-0 Tuesday with a 320-269 victory over the Coldwater Cudas.
Sisters Carley and Cori Stone each won three events for the girls team, with Carley taking first in the 11-12-year-old girls 25-yard freestyle, 50 freestyle and backstroke. Cori picked up victories in the 13-14-year-old girls 50 freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.
Gavin Thobe won the 9-10-year-old boys individual medley, backstroke and breaststroke, and Marshall Hull was first in the 15-and-older boys butterfly, individual medley and backstroke.
Chloe Will, Audra Bubp, Andy Gray and Alexis Bubp each added two victories.

Schwieterman lifts REMC
Aubrie Schwieterman came up with the key hit for Jay County REMC Tuesday as it knocked off First Merchants Bank 10-9 in Portland Junior League Rookie softball.
REMC held First Merchants scoreless in the top of the fifth inning to preserve a tie, and Schwieterman gave her team the win with a one-out single to drive in Kylie Morningstar. Schwieterman finished with four hits, including a triple, three runs and three RBIs, and Haleigh Clayton and Morningstar each had four hits and two runs.
Jayden Claytor drove in six runs for First Merchants.
In Tuesday’s other game, Rieley Brewster drove in seven runs and also had three hits and three runs to lead Brewster Electric to a 13-9 victory over Portland Optimist. Emma Swingley had three hits, three runs and two RBIs.
Optimist got three extra-base hits, six RBIs and two runs from Maebry Ninde.[[In-content Ad]]
