SAHS netters earn first win
South Adams roundup
UNION CITY — The Starfires finally broke through.
After a winless first month of the season, the South Adams High School girls tennis team picked up its first victory Wednesday 3-2 over the Union City Indians.
Shiana Scott and Erika Miller secured the win for the Starfires (1-11) as they bounced back from a first-set defeat at No. 1 doubles. They rallied past Alexandra Anderson and Taylor Anderson for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Holly Taylor topped Ashley Rismiller 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Madison Kloepper won 6-4, 6-0 over Allison Hunt in the No. 3 singles match.
At No. 1 singles, Maddie Graber suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Ashley Mink. Faith VonGunten and Megan Hreha fell 6-2, 7-5 to Mikayla Alexander and Emily Smith at No. 2 doubles.
The teams split the four junior varsity matches, with Jordan Brown and the team of Alyssa Armenta and Paris Mohler earning wins for SAHS.
Baseball falls
BERNE — The Cambridge City Lincoln Eagles scored in all but one inning Wednesday as it handed the Starfires an 11-1 defeat.
South Adams fell behind 5-0 before scoring its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Eagles responded with four runs in the top of the sixth on the way to the 10-run victory.
Alex Augsberger took the loss for the Starfires as he gave up two hits and three walks in four innings, but all four runs against him were unearned. He struck out four batters.
Dustin Wanner had a single and a double, and Shea Pyle also finished with two hits. Zach Morgan scored the lone SAHS run.
