SAHS netters stay perfect

FORT WAYNE — Scott Hoeppner fought for a three-set win Saturday to complete the South Adams High School boys tennis team’s 5-0 victory over the host Blackhawk Christian Braves.
Hoeppner eked out a tiebreaker win in the first set before dropping the second. But he fought off Jake Fielder in the third set at No. 1 singles for a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4 victory.
Mark Muselman defeated Michael Overbeck 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles for the Starfires (3-0), and Brayden Myers topped Triston Mills 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. In doubles action Derek Schwartz and Ian Frank cruised past Ben Bailey and Jeremy Hoover at No. 1, and J.D. Tarr and Jonathan Steffen beat Alex Beecy and Trevor Smith 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.
South Adams won 4-1 in junior varsity action with Landon Lehman and Dylan Pierce turning in an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Spikers go 1-3
DENVER — The Starfire volleyball team finished 11th out of 12 teams at Saturday’s North Miami Tomahawk Tournament, but was able to pick up its third victory of the season.
South Adams’ win came in the 11th-place match by a 25-20, 22-25, 15-9 score over Northwestern. The team fell 25-4, 25-19 to Maconaquah, 25-8, 25-16 to Northfield and 25-11, 23-25, 15-13 to Oak Hill.
The Starfires, who won just five matches in 2010, are 3-3 after their first week of action this season. They will host Jay County tonight, with freshman action beginning at 5 p.m.
Soccer teams fall
HARTFORD CITY — South Adams competed in double-header action Saturday with the girls team falling 4-1 to the host Blackford Bruins. The boys lost 2-0.
The lone goal for the Starfires on the day came from Rachel Simon in the second half of the girls game. Brianna Nevil recorded eight saves for the Starfires.
Blackford scored twice in each half.
South Adams took 15 shots on goal in the boys game, but did not get any past Bruins goalie Makenzie Gearheart. Blackford’s Tryse Hendricks scored once in the first half and once in the second.[[In-content Ad]]
