SAHS runners crush Woodlan

WOODBURN — The first 10 runners across the finish line were wearing black and gold.
South Adams High School’s boys cross country team dominated the host Woodlan Warriors Monday, sweeping the top 10 for a 15-50 victory. In the girls competition, the Starfires took the top three spots in a 17-40 win.
Evan Liechty led the domination by the SAHS boys, winning by 30 seconds over teammate Brody Shane in 17 minutes, 7 seconds. Joel Hawbaker was third in 18:17 ahead of Simon Sprunger (fourth – 18:26) and Andrew Steffen (fifth – 19:02).
Hannah Moore and Kristen Muselman went one-two in the girls race, finishing with matching times of 22:04. Jenna Smith was third in 22:19 followed by Aleesha Goodwin (fifth – 22:52) and Allison Amstutz (sixth – 23:10).
South Adams also dominated the middle school competition with the girls winning 15-50 and the boys 18-37. Olivia Von Gunten won the girls race in 12:25, and Ryan Ford was first for the boys in 11:25.

SA spikers sweep
PONETO — South Adams’ volleyball team halted a five-match losing streak Tuesday, sweeping the host Southern Wells Raiders 25-22, 25-9, 25-22.
Chelsea Bollenbacher finished with 10 kills and a pair of blocks for the Starfires, who improved to 4-8. Alyssa Bluhm added nine assists and six kills.
Lauren Smith came up with 11 digs, and Lily Taing recorded seven aces and five digs.
The SAHS junior varsity team picked up a 25-15, 18-25, 15-11 win with Mackenzie Jennings totaling nine assists, six aces and three digs.

Star netters lose
MONROE — The South Adams boys tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision Tuesday to the host Adams Central Flying Jets.
Mark Muselman picked up a three-set victory at No. 3 singles for the Starfires, who are 7-4 on the season, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 over Jacob Weil. Scott Hoeppner defeated Conner Lengerich 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
In the No. 1 singles match, Alex Huber fell 6-1, 6-0 to Nathan Barger. In doubles action Derek Schwartz and Ian Frank lost 6-2, 6-2 to Keaton Fiecther and Derek Roe at No. 1, and Jonathan Steffen and J.D. Tarr fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to Isaac Luginbill and Jon Weil at No. 2.
SAHS dropped the junior varsity match 6-0.

SA girls soccer falls
NEW HAVEN — A pair of first-half goals buried South Adams Tuesday in a 3-1 loss to the New Haven Bulldogs.Breanna Wurm, a sophomore, scored twice in the opening 40 minutes to lead the Bulldogs, and added another goal in the second half for a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Alaina Johnston came up with the lone goal for the Starfires off an assist from sophomore Olivia Turner.
Brianna Nevil finished with 18 saves for SAHS, which dropped to 2-6.

FR spikers rally
FORT RECOVERY — After getting blown out in the opening game, the Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team fought back for a 10-25, 26-24, 25-21 victory Tuesday over the Russia Raiders.
Emilie Sheridan paced the Indians (1-1) with seven points and four assists. Rachel Pugh had seven points and two kills, and Jurnee Bechtol notched three kills.

SAMS 8th wins
BLUFFTON — The South Adams eighth grade football team defeated the Bluffton Tigers 12-7 Tuesday. The seventh graders fell, 25-12.
Justin Nussbaum scored both of the touchdowns for the eighth grade Starfires on 1-yard runs. Drew LeFever led the offense with 89 yards and 20 carries, and Justin Mohler and Kody Coates each made four tackles.
Blade Zeitvogel ran 15 times for 90 yards, including a 2-year TD run, for the seventh graders. Marc Teeter scored on a 45-yard pass from Josh Lahr, and James Groh finished with six tackles.

Cards top Fort
NEW BREMEN, Ohio — The Fort Recovery middle school volleyball teams each fell Tuesday to the New Bremen Cardinals, the seventh graders by a 25-12, 19-25, 25-15 final and the eighth graders 25-6, 25-8.
Both squads are 1-2.
Devon Post racked up seven kills and six points for the seventh grade squad. Emily Hart added six points.
Kendra Siefring finished with two kills and a block to pace the eighth graders. Julie Wendel, Trisha Thien and Kayla Fullenkamp each added two points.[[In-content Ad]]
