SAHS settles for split

BERNE - The South Adams High School baseball team fell just an inning short of a sweep Saturday, settling for a split with the visiting Eastbrook Panthers.

SAHS won the first game 8-3 and led by two in the second before giving up seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to drop game two 9-4.

John Striker led the victory in the opener as he drove in four runs. Caleb Sprunger doubled and scored three times, and Heath Moser had two RBIs.

Dustin Wanner earned the victory, striking out five as he allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Nick Batt took the defeat in game two as he failed to record an out in giving up five runs - four earned - on five hits.

Wanner drove in two runs, and Caleb Sprunger, Gabe Sprunger, Striker and T.J. Burnfield each scored once.

SA girls track wins two

FORT WAYNE - South Adams' girls track team won the long-distance relays at Saturday's Wayne Invitational, but still finished at the bottom of the six-team field with 43 points.

No. 2 Lawrence Central won the meet with 134, and New Haven was second at 75.

Allison Beitler, Hannah Moore, Sawyer Shane and Kristen Muselman teamed for both of the wins for the Starfires, who finished two points behind fifth-place Bishop Dwenger. They rolled in the 4x800-meter relay by nearly 13 seconds to win in 10 minutes, 26.6 seconds.

The team took the top spot in the distance medley in 14:02, winning by more than five seconds.

Beitler turned in the top individual finish for SAHS, posting a time of 5:53 in the 1,600 run.

FR JV softball falls

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team lost 21-6 to the Russia Raiders Saturday and 6-2 to the Fort Loramie Redskins.

Stacy Stammen paced the Tribe offense as she singled and drove in five runs against Russia. She added a single and a run in the loss to Fort Loramie.

Jasmine Bechtol had a double and two RBIs in the opener, and Melissa Lochtefeld added a single and two runs. In game two, Becca Tobe finished with a single, a double and a run.

Tobe took both losses, giving up a total of 25 hits and 11 walks in the two games.

Sutter ties record

NEW BREMEN, Ohio - Alex Shelton tied a school record Saturday as she turned in a win and a second-place finish for the Fort Recovery Middle School girls track team.

Shelton's effort led the Tribe girls to an eighth-place finish out of 12 teams at the Cardinal Invitational with 29 points. Coldwater won with 133.5.

The FRHS boys team scored 42 points to finish in the seventh place while Minster won with 112.5.

Shelton tied the FRMS school record and broke the Cardinal Invitational meet record as she won the 200-meter dash by three tenths of a second in 28.6 seconds. She was also the 100 dash runner-up in 13.71.

Bobby Mattraw had the top effort for the boys team, taking the runner-up spot in the shot put at 40 feet, 4 ¾ inches and placing fourth in the discus at 115 feet, six inches.

Other top finishes for the Indian boys came from David Trobridge (third - 200 dash, fourth - 400 dash), Josh Pohl (third - 1,600 run, fourth - 800 run) and Kent Retz (third - high jump).[[In-content Ad]]
