SAHS sweeps Knights

FOUNTAIN CITY — The Starfires are hot heading into sectional play.
South Adams High School’s baseball team closed its regular season by sweeping a doubleheader 7-2 and 14-3 Saturday over the host Northeastern Knights. The victories pushed the winning streak to nine games for SAHS, which will open tournament play against Adams Central at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Indiana Tech.
Collin Affolder powered the Starfires (18-10) to the sweep, finishing the opening game 3-for-4 with four RBIs. He had two hits, two RBIs and a run in game two.
Chase Ingle was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs in the second game.
Nick Batt struck out 10 batters as he went the distance in the game-one win. Dustin Wanner picked up the victory in the second game.

SA softball falls
FOUNTAIN CITY — The South Adams softball team lost 8-3 and 5-0 as it also closed its regular season on the road against the Northeastern Knights.
The Starfires (10-18), who will play host Eastside in sectional action at 7 p.m. tonight, fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of the opening and never led.
Alyssa Bluhm suffered both losses, giving up six runs in three innings in the opener and allowing five runs on nine hits in game two.
Senior Lyndsey Chandler was 2-for-2 with a run in the first game. Her twin sister Logan, playing for the first time after suffering a broken hand in a preseason scrimmage, had two hits in the second.
On Friday the Starfires dropped a 3-2 decision to host Snider. Alaina Johnston had two hits and a run, and Brianna Nevil finished with a hit and two RBIs.

Nichols leads
MONTPELIER — For the fourth straight week, Travis Nichols was the top local driver at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Nichols, a Portland resident, came away with a seventh-place finish in Saturday’s Thunder Cars event. Brian Baldauf and Steve Mills, both of Portland, were 10th and 21st respectively.
Portland’s Mason Stewart finished ninth in the UMP Modifieds race, and Richard Williams, also of Portland, was ninth in the Super Streets race. Jamie Heiser of Fort Recovery followed Williams in 12th.
