SAMS play area improved (2/11/04)
South Adams board agrees to changes
BERNE — South Adams Middle School students will be having more fun on the playground next year.
Principal Scott Litwiller outlined a number of playground improvements Tuesday night for members of the South Adams School Board.
“We have talked for quite awhile about what we can do to our playground to make it more age appropriate,” Litwiller said. The middle school in Geneva is for grades four, five and six.
In order to promote physical activity and appeal to that age group, items such as a merry-go-round have been removed. A swing set also has been removed due to safety concerns because it was too close to the building.
In their place, Litwiller said, the school has added tether ball poles and a volleyball court. The next step will be the addition of a low climbing wall and a number of other pieces of equipment meant to be climbed on.
In an area in the northeast corner of the playground, new items such as a “challenge walk,” chinning bars, a horizontal loop ladder, and a “lift-me-up” will be installed this summer.
In a spot near the northwest edge of the playground, the climbing wall will be installed. The serpentine wall, which starts at about three feet, rises to no more than seven feet. It’s intended more for horizontal climbing than vertical climbing, Litwiller said.
Additional wood chips will be installed for safety reasons around both sets of new equipment.
Litwiller said the total cost of the equipment is $10,200. Some of that total will be covered by the school’s equipment fund, and a portion will be covered by remaining funds from FCC Indiana’s recent gift to the school corporation.
The school’s Parent-Teacher Organization also has spent about $2,000 to provide four new benches, a picnic table and a trash receptacle for the playground.
The new equipment will be installed this summer.
“I think it sounds exciting, and I think the kids will like it,” said superintendent Connie Bailey.
Following the board’s brief public meeting, it met in executive session to discuss collective bargaining strategy and to review job performance evaluations.[[In-content Ad]]
