SA's Rupp earns semi-state berth (10/15/07)

Local roundup

MARION - Nathan Rupp earned himself at least one more week.

The top South Adams High School runner finished 11th in the boys race at the Marion cross country regional Saturday, earning himself a semi-state berth. The Starfires' team season came to a close as it finished ninth out of 10 teams with 204 points.

Huntington North won the meet with 38 points, followed by Norwell with 81. Homestead, the host Giants and Bellmont earned the other three semi-state qualifying positions.

Rupp picked up his effort against the regional competition, finishing just over a second out of ninth place as he improved upon his sectional time by nearly 40 seconds. His 11th-place time was 16-minutes, 48.8 seconds, with Kodi Mullins of Homestead 10th in 16:48.0 and Marion's Michael Waymire ninth in 16:47.7.

No other SAHS runner was in the top 320 as Aaron Lehman followed Rupp for the team in 37th at 17:53. Sam Heckard was 52nd in 18:21 followed by Gabe Sprunger (53rd - 18:30) and Justin Sommer (56th - 18:52).

Garringer OK, out Friday

Jay County High School wide receiver Adam Garringer suffered a concussion during Friday night's 28-13 win over Greenfield-Central, but he will be OK.

Garringer took a hard hit during the third quarter, but never lost conciousness. He was transported to Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, his mother, Carmen, said this morning, and he stayed there until about midnight.

He was experiencing similar symptons - mainly short-term memory loss - to what teammate Billy Wellman had when he suffered a concussion earlier this season. Carmen Garringer said her son's CT scan was clear, but he would be held out of school through Wednesday and be out of Friday's sectional opener against Muncie Central before being re-evaluated Saturday.

Garringer's concussion marked the second straight week and third time this season a player has suffered a potentially-severe head/neck injury at a Jay County football game. Last week Derryon Smith was taken off the field in an ambulance after suffering a neck injury, but was out of the hospital and on his way home by the time the game was over. Wellman suffered his concussion Aug. 25 against Blackford and missed one week of action.
