Taking Note
The public is invited to indulge in a Dessert Extravaganza that will be hosted at Arts Place, Inc. today.
From 2 to 4 p.m. confections for tasting will be offered by Country Catering & White Linen Hall, Portland; Ghyslain Chocolatier, Union City; Sharlette’s Fudgery & Candies, Portland; and Zinszer Bakery, Anderson. Gourmet coffees will also be provided.
Tickets are available for $5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the desk. They may also be purchased by calling (260) 726-4809 or online at www.artsland.org.
MARDI GRAS
The Jay County High School French Club is throwing a Mardi Gras party at the high school on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the south hallway.
In celebration of the Mardi Gras holiday, a café offering homemad French food such as croissants, crepes, eclairs, quiches and fruit will be set up in a bistro-type setting. Mask making and games will also be offered for kids.
Admission is free and the cost of food is reasonable.
ORATORICAL CONTEST
The Jay County Optimist Oratorical contest will be held Thursday, Feb. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Jay County Public Library, 315 N. Ship St., Portland.
The public is invited to atten. Refreshments will be served.
OUTSTANDING STUDENTS
Several Bloomfield Elementary students were given the distinction of being a Winner With Life Skills.
Each month, students are nominated by staff for their extraordinary use of the life skill of the month. The skill for January was common sense.
Winners were: Dillon Ainsworth, Tasia Boolman, Rachel Braun, Kim Braun, Andrea Bruggeman, Branden Doublin, Danielle Heitkamp, Jacob Heitkamp, Elizabeth Hurst, Caitlin Mark, Becky Muhlenkamp, Miranda Reinhart, Emily Westgerdes, and Michael Williamson.
BASKET WEAVING
Another basket class is being offered at the West Jay Community Center on March 30.
Local basket artist Connie Whetsel will teach participants to make a tote basket. Each will have the opportunity to choose what size tote will be made.
Reservations need to be made by calling the center at (765) 768-1544 or Whetsel during the day at (765) 768-7766 or in the evening at (765) 768-6772. At the time of reservation, each participant needs to specify the basket size to be made.
Cost for the class is $20 or $22 for the class.
PROM DRESS EXCHANGE
The Winchester Community High School is the site for a prom dress exchange to be held Sunday, March 7, from 1 to 4 p.m.
The exchange is an opportunity to buy or sell gently used dresses. Dresses to be sold must be clean and placed in a clear plastic bag. An envelope will be provided by the school staff for name, phone number, dress size and selling price.
Accessories, handbags and shoes may also be bought and sold. They should be placed in a seperate clear plastic bag and tagged the same as the dresses.
All articles must be brought to the main office at the high school on Friday, March 5, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Unsold dresses and money may be picked up following the sale at 4:30 p.m.
Cash and checks only will be acceptable forms of payment.
