Big night
Monday is senior honors night at Jay County High School, with thousands of dollars of scholarships and countless awards scheduled to be presented.
The event begins at 7 p.m. in the JCHS auditorium. Seniors, parents, family members, and friends are welcome to attend.
Recycling
The Jay County Solid Waste District will have two recycling trailers out today.
One trailer will be in the Ludwig’s IGA parking lot in Dunkirk from 9 a.m. to noon. The trailer will be staffed by West Jay Optimist Club members.
There also will be a trailer in the LoBill Foods parking lot in Portland from 9 a.m. to noon. This trailer is staffed by the Judan Judo Club.
Concerts
The East Jay Middle School and Jay County High School Choral Departments will perform their spring concerts next week in the Jay County High School auditorium.
The EJMS spring program will be on Thursday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. The JCHS spring program will be performed on Sunday, May 18, at 1:30 p.m.
Vetoed
Gov. Frank O’Bannon has vetoed five more bills passed last month by the General Assembly, The Associated Press reported. The bills included two that he said could weaken state efforts to protect the environment.
Another bill dealt with regulations on livestock operations, one would have established a commission on American Indian affairs, and the other would enhance penalties for resisting law enforcement.
O’Bannon rejected the latter bill in part because it could increase costs on the Department of Correction — a heightened concern because lawmakers did not provide money to expand prison operations.
The latest vetoes, issued Thursday and Friday, bring the total to six for this session. The General Assembly can meet June 19 to consider veto overrides, but lawmakers have not exercised such an option in recent years.
Deaths
Ruth Godfrey, 83, Berne, a former Portland resident.
George H. Downing, 68, Geneva.

Weather
A floodwatch continues for the area on Saturday.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely today, and some of the thunderstorms may be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Highs are expected to be near 80. The chance of rain is 60 percent.
Similar conditions are forecast for tonight, and rain may be heavy at times. The chance of rain is 70 percent tonight, with lows in the lower 60s. On Sunday, the forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with a 30 percent chance of showers. Highs should be in the mid 60s. Sunday night’s lows will be in the mid 40s.
Monday’s forecast is similar, with mostly cloudy skies expected and a chance of showers. Conditions should be breezy, with highs in the lower 60s.[[In-content Ad]]
