Recycling

The Jay County Solid Waste District will have two recycling trailers out today.

One trailer will be in the Ludwig’s parking lot in Dunkirk from 9 a.m. to noon. The trailer will be staffed by West Jay Optimist Club members.

There also will be a trailer in the LoBill Foods parking lot in Portland from 9 a.m. to noon. This trailer is staffed by the Judan Judo Club.

Tech trigger

A man who apparently was using a laptop computer as he drove may have triggered a two-car collision that killed a Starke County woman and critically injured her teenage son, The Associated Press reported.

Bonnie Coffin, 39, of Hamlet was killed Thursday on U.S. 31 just south of South Bend.

Her son, whose name was not released, was critically injured, as was the driver of the car who apparently had been using the computer, police said.

St. Joseph County police who arrived at the scene reported finding a laptop computer open and in a working mode in a van belonging to Dale Brenon, 50, of Shorewood.

One driver told police Brenon was swerving and nearly struck her car just before the fatal crash, said Jaimee Thirion, a county police spokeswoman. A moment later, Brenon’s van crossed the center line and struck Coffin’s car.

To teach

The spiritual leader of Indiana’s United Methodists will teach at Emory University in Atlanta after his mandatory retirement next August, The Associated Press reported.

Indiana Area Bishop Woodie W. White will become bishop-in-residence at the university’s Candler School of Theology for a term of four years beginning next September.

In addition to counseling seminarians, White will teach courses on church and race relations, said Candler’s dean, Russell E. Richey.

A civil rights activist, White was the first senior executive of the church’s General Commission on Religion and Race, serving as general secretary from 1969 to 1984.

White became bishop to Indiana’s 230,000 United Methodists — the state’s largest mainline Protestant denomination — in 1992. The New York City native was elected a bishop in 1984 and served in Illinois before coming to Indiana. He was president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops in 1996-97.
