Schoch new head of SA board (7/16/03)
South Adams school board picks new officers
The South Adams School Board voted Tuesday to start fresh with some new leadership.
The board voted 4-1 Tuesday to appoint Agnes Schoch as its new president, replacing former board president Russ Flueckiger. Schoch had served the previous two years as vice president of the board.
Flueckiger, who had been board president for two years, did not attend the meeting because he was on vacation.
Arlene Amstutz — last year’s secretary — was the unanimous selection for board vice president for the 2003-04 school year, and Denny Affolder will hold board office for the first time in the secretary/legislative liaison position.
When the floor was open for nominations, Affolder nominated Flueckiger to return as president. Amstutz followed with the nomination of Schoch, and then it was put to a vote. Affolder was the only board member who voted for Flueckiger, as the remaining four members of the board cast their votes for Schoch.
Amstutz and Affolder were unopposed.
In other business Thursday, the board:
•Approved the following appointments for corporation positions from Supt. Connie Bailey: Linda McMullen, treasurer; Sally Thomas, deputy treasurer, Linda McMullen, recording secretary; Sue Shoaf, Betty Stuber, Sandy Flueckiger, extra-curricular treasurers; and Jim Beitler and Bose, McKinney, and Evans LLP, attorneys.
These appointments are annually-recurring appointments, and these individuals have held the positions for the last several years.
•Accepted the following summer school recommendations: Sandy Sprunger and Kristie Brown, to teach classes for incoming sixth graders; Judy Lipina and Jeni Lingo, incoming third graders; Cindy Sprunger and Tina Miller, math summer school; and Steve Tatman to teach English GQE remediation.
Classes will run from July 28 to Aug. 15, for three hours per day. GQE classes will be paid for by the GQE grant.
•Set the school board meetings for the next year for the second Tuesday of each month.
•Designated the Berne Tri-Weekly and the Decatur Daily Democrat as the newspapers that will receive the school corporation’s legal notices. Both of these papers held the same designation last year.
•Recommended employment contracts for non-certified employees to include a 1 percent salary increase for all 2002-03 contracted employees and another 1 percent salary increase for 2003-04 contracted employees.
And beginning Oct. 1, the employees will pay 20 percent of the premium increase for their health care benefits. This is not 20 percent of the total premium, but only 20 percent of the increase in premium. Depending on if the non-certified employee is on the Network or Indemnity plan, the increased deduction in the paycheck could range from just above $1 to as much as $16.71.
•Approved the corporation's membership in the following organizations: Indiana High School Athletic Association, North Central Accreditation Association, Indiana Middle Level Education Association/National Middle School Association, Division of Student Activities, Indiana Association of School Principals, National Association of Elementary School Principals, National Association of Secondary School Principals, American Association of School Administrators, Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents, Indiana School Boards Association, National School Boards Association, Berne Chamber of Commerce, Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Indiana Small and Rural Schools Association, Upper Wabash Valley School Study and Region 8 Education Service Center.
•Unanimously approved book rental fees for all grades of the corporation. High school fees are different based upon which classes students decide to take. Middle and elementary school fees are: kindergarten, $26.94; first grade, $76.42; second grade, $80.45; third grade, $87.81; fourth grade, $82.11, fifth grade, $91.20; and sixth grade, $87.76.
•Set the budget schedule as follows: July 30, short meeting to give permission to advertise the budget; Aug. 19, budget hearing; and Sept. 9, meeting to recommend approval of the budget.
•Approved a request for South Adams High School principal Brent Lehman to attend the North Central Fall Conference in Indianapolis on Oct. 6 and 7.[[In-content Ad]]
