Scholarship winners named (09/13/07)
Taking Note
The Portland Foundation recently announced its scholarship recipients.
David Knoth and Matthew Knoth were both awarded the Dr. Ara C. and Gary B. Badders Medical Scholarship.
Matthew will receive $2,000 per semester for four semesters. He plans to graduate in 2009 from Purdue University with a doctorate of pharmacy degree.
David will receive $2,000 per semester for six semesters. He plans to graduate in 2010 from Purdue University with a doctorate of pharmacy degree.
Nicole VanSkyock was awarded the Marseal T. Deweerd, Edith T. Horn and Virgie M. Brady Memorial Scholarship for $400.
Nicole is a senior at Anderson University majoring in athletic training.
Angela Bye, Kathy Carpenter, Brittney Emerick, Kari Griffith, Deborah Howell and Brian Ison, all from Portland, were all awarded the John Jay Center for Learning Scholarship and will receive $500 each.
Bye is studying business administration at Ivy Tech; Carpenter is studying business administration at Indiana Wesleyan; Emerick is studying radiology at Ivy Tech; Griffith, Howell and Ison are all studying business at Indiana Wesleyan.
Lauren Budde, Portland; Nicholas Ehrhart, Portland; Christopher Mercer, Bryant; Jill Roughia, Bryant; and Julie Sours, Portland; all were awarded the Alwyn Carder Scholarship. Juniors will receive $750 per semester for up to four semesters and seniors will receive &750 per semester for two semesters.
Budde is studying elementary education at Anderson University; Ehrhart is studying secondary education at Ball State University; Mercer is studying elementary education at IU East; Roughia is studying history education at Huntington University; and Sours is studying secondary education at Indiana University. The are all juniors.
Kari Griffith, Portland, received the Altrusa Club Non-Traditional Student Scholarship for $250. She is studying business at Indiana Wesleyan through the John Jay Center for Learning.
Tonya Foster, George Hollowell, Kevin Lawhead and Kimberly Norris all received the Jerry R. Pierce Memorial Scholarship worth $3,000.
Foster is studying to become a registered nurse at Excelsior College of New York; Hollowell is studying computer science at Ivy Tech, Muncie; Lawhead is studying mechanical engineering at Penn-Foster College of Scranton, Pa.; and Norris is studying graphic design at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Author Jacquelyn Mitchard will speak at Jay County Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 11, discussing her life as a columnist. The event will include lunch, a gift basket raffle and book signing.
