School-to-work students honored
Taking Note
These Jay County High School students, participating in the Interdisciplinary Cooperative Education program, and several local businesses were honored during a banquet held Wednesday.
These 17 seniors and juniors went to school half a day this year and worked at a paid position the remainder of their school day. Students were required to work between 15 and 32 hours a week.
Students Sarah Ainsworth worked at the Jay County Courthouse, Portland, Brandon Davis worked at R. Davis & Sons, rural Portland, and Lindsay Friddle was employed by Progressive Office Products, Portland. Bob Dirkson Dairy Farms, rural Bryant, employed David Huelskamp, Janae Johnson was employed by the Portland Veterinary Clinic, Portland and Lauren Lawhead worked at Family Health Care of Portland, Portland.
Caleb Lutes worked at the Porltand Tire & Service and Aker-Taylor Plumbing, both in Portland; Craig Muhlenkamp worked at Fullenkamp Machine, Portland, and Felisha Parr was employed at Jay Petroleum in rural Portland.
Portland business Curves for Women employed Andrea Reynolds, Josh Richards worked at Bryant Combine, Bryant, Robbie Rodgers and Jonelle Shawver were employed at Display Craft, Portland, and Tyler Shannon worked at Mike’s Rent-All, Portland.
Travis Shawver worked at S & H Equipment Maintenance, and Marijean Tipton was employed at Jay County Hospital in Portland.
I.C.E. coordinator Alice Poole said recently that she attempts to match students with employers in fields that the students are interested in beginning a career.
NO GIFTS
Mr. and Mrs. Willis Jordan, who are celebrating their 55th anniversary Sunday, May 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Bryant Community Center would like to request that gifts be omitted.
OFFICERS ELECTED
Golder-Pottkotter Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) 6515 Ladies Auxiliary in Fort Recovery elected officers at their April 6 meeting.
Sheila Katterhenry was elected president; Lori Keller, senior vice; Betty Hoover, junior vice; Lisa Topp, treasurer; Della Tobe, secretary; Marcel Alig, conductress; Ann Ridgeway, guard; Nancy Wendel, chaplain; Cindy Schrader, patriotic instructor; Betty Hoover, one year trustee; Anna Schrader, two year trustee and Deb Bonifas, three year trustee.
GARAGE SALES
The annual Fort Recovery community garage sales will be held Saturday, June 5th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are sponsored by Psi Iota Xi Sorority. Those having garage sales will donate 20% of the proceeds for community improvements. To register, call Leslie Fenik at (419) 375-3104 or Mary Diller at (419) 375-4956.
BERNE BREAKFAST
A free breakfast will be held Friday, May 14, from 7 to 9 a.m. in the Swiss Village auditorium in Berne. The event is held each May in honor of Older Americans Month and is sponsored by Swiss Village and the Berne Rotary Club.
Blood pressures will be offered at no charge, Chem screens will be offered for $25, Chem 30 plus TSH screens for $40 and PSA screens for $20.
BABY CONTEST
Andrew Toney was the first runner-up in the New Star Discovery Contest held in Indianapolis on May 8 and May 9.
He is three years old and is the son of Michael and Stacie Toney of Portland. He will compete in national competition in August.
DEAN’S LIST
Blake B. Watson, son of C.W. and Sharon Watson, Redkey, made the dean’s list for the spring semester at Indiana University East. He is pursuing a degree in Social Work.
Travis Richards, Portland, recently made the dean’s list at Tri-State University.
GRADUATES
Lieutenant Brennan Bubp recently graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor of science degree in food science and human nutrition. He is the son of Jane Bryan and former Portland resident Stephen Bubp and the grandson of Agnes Bubp and the late LaDoyt Bubp of Portland.
He attended field training at Tyndall A.F.B. in the summer of 2002. While in the ROTC he received the athletic award, academic award, honors ribbon, and civic air patrol ribbon.
He is categorized as a space and missiles officer and will undertake his first assignment at Maxwell A.F.B. in Alabama, while he awaits an opening for space and missile training in California.
TELETHON
Riley Children’s Foundation will hold its 21st annual Riley Telethon to benefit Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis, on Saturday, June 5.
The telethon will be televised on Fort Wayne channel 21 Alive WPTA-TV from noon to 6 p.m. and on Indianapolis WTHR Channel 13 from noon to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 to 11 p.m.
BALL STATE
Adults, college and high school students are invited to rehearse and perform with Ball State University’s Summer Chorus with no audition for fees. College credit is also available is desired.
Rehearsals will be Monday, May 17, May 24, June 7, and June 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Hargreaves Music Building Room 303.
The songs will be from Phantom of the Opera and Brigadoon. Participants will then perform in a free concert on Friday, June 18, at 8 p.m. in Pruis Hall.

Indiana State Police Youth Services Camps are open to students in grade five through grade 12 and are held on college campuses across the state.
Respect for Law Camp is for fifth and sixth graders and the cost is $75. These camps will be held between June 10th and July 31st at various college campuses.
Lions Law Camp, for those who have already attended Respect for Law Camp, costs $95 and will be held at Earlham College or Vincennes University from July 14 to 17.
Career Camp, for high school students, costs $170 and will be held at Vincennes University on July 11 to 16 for boys and Anderson University on July 11 to 16 for girls.
