Schools academic teams compete
Taking Note
West Jay Middle School academic teams competed April 30 in Academic Super Bowl Competition at Union County Middle School in Liberty with one team taking first place.
Interdisciplinary team members Brody Barcus, Julia Garringer, Courtney Rickmeyer and Charles Shreeve placed first and were one of the top 10 schools in Indiana.
Science team members Julia Garringer, Ellie Moore Snyder and Charles Shreeve placed third.
Social studies team members Brody Barcus and Courtney Rickmeyer placed third.
English team members Julia Garringer, Ellie Moore Snyder and Courtney Rickmeyer placed fourth.
Math team members Brody Barcus and Charles Shreeve placed third.
The coach is Laura McCollum.
East competes

Interdisciplinary team members Mitchell Kunkler, Andrew McShane, Katy Smeltzer, Pride Duncan, Ali Betts, Julie Schubert and Audrey Shreve placed second in class 2 and fourth overall.
Science team members Andrew McShane, Jacob Shepherd, Luke Rowles, Courtney Thomas and Julie Schubert placed first in class 2 and first overall.
Social studies team members Jessica Kerrigan, Julie Schubert, Jacob Shepherd, Ali Betts and Katy Smeltzer placed second in class 2 and eighth overall.
English team members Jessica Kerrigan, Pride Duncan, Jessie Duncan, Mitchell Kunkler and Andrew McShane placed second in class 2 and sixth overall.
Math team members Mitchell Kunkler, Katy Smeltzer, Faith Parr, Audrey Shreve and Katie Carpenter placed first in class 2 and third overall.
The coach is Deborah Kilander. Team proctor is Rita Kerrigan.
Inducted
Megan Adams, Portland, was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society on May 3 at Huntington University. Membership in Chi Alpha Sigma is given to those who display excellent character and citizenship, an outstanding scholarship of a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or higher, an earned varsity letter and a junior or senior academic standing.
Adams is a senior majoring in public relations and a member of the tennis team.
New member
Jennifer Hunt, Portland, recently accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars at Ball State University. She will be honored during an induction convocation this fall at the school.
Hunt just completed her sophomore year and is majoring in elementary education. Her parents are Randy and Julie Hunt.
Attends convention
Jodi McKee, Heather Hedges, Pat Gibson and Lori DeRome, Beta Theta Chapter members of Tri Kappa of Portland, recently attended the 59th State Convention of Tri Kappa at Indianapolis Marriott East.
Beta Theta Chapter has 28 members. The sorority awards scholarship to high school seniors and gives to numerous organizations.[[In-content Ad]]
