By By BETH A. CLAYTON-
FFA chapters at Fort Recovery and Jay County high schools will recognize National FFA Week Tuesday through Friday with a number of activities designed to call attention to agriculture education.
The events in Fort Recovery begin on Tuesday with Tractor Drive-in Day and Greenhand Initiation. Members can drive their tractors to school and prizes will be awarded to those driving the cleanest, newest, oldest, biggest and smallest tractors.
A similar event, the Truck Drive-in, will be on Wednesday.
Also on Tuesday, first year members will have their hands dyed green, a traditional symbol of earning the Greenhand FFA Degree.
Community members are invited to take part in the Community FFA Omelet Breakfast, on Wednesday, Feb. 22. FFA members will make breakfast from 6 to 8 a.m. at Fort Recovery High School in the commons for business leaders, community leaders, teachers and parents in thanks for their support.
Fort FFA members will visit elementary schools with the Food for America program and Elementary Petting Zoo. Food for America is designed to educate elementary students about food and agriculture in their daily lives.
The Elementary Petting Zoo will be held for kindergarten through second-graders to learn about agriculture. The petting zoo will also be open to community members from 9 to 11 a.m. and noon to 2:30 p.m. in the agricultural shop.
Thursday is also FFA Official Dress day. Students are invited to wear their blue corduroy jackets to school.
Finally, the Agricultural Olympics will be held on Friday.
Students will compete in events such as a milk chug contest, a pedal tractor race and an egg carry during assemblies at each school.
At Jay County High School, FFA members will ask trivia questions on Jay Today for prizes, and host a “Green Guess” game in the commons during lunch each.
Also at JCHS on Tuesday, FFA members will park their cars to spell out “FFA” and have a photograph taken from an airplane. They will also give an award to the muddiest truck.
JCHS students will host a state FFA officer to speak to FFA members Wednesday. Members will wear their FFA jackets Wednesday and FFA tee-shirts on Friday.
In addition, the FFA roster from both schools will be read at intervals on WPGW on Thursday.
Since 1948 National FFA Week has been held each year during the week of George Washington’s birthday to honor his commitment to American agriculture.[[In-content Ad]]
