Schools renew health insurance (5/20/03)
Premium will increase 5 percent
The Jay School Board approved the corporation’s medical insurance provider during its meeting Monday.
A contract with Humana Insurance was renewed for another year by school board members with a unanimous 6-0 vote.
The school system’s medical coverage was through Humana last year, and the school will see a 5 percent increase in the premium cost for the 2003-2004 school year.
Currently, Jay Schools officials do not know how much the coverage will cost because the memo of understanding for non-certified staff has not been approved. Following that approval, it will be determined how much general fund money will have to be spent to cover the remainder of the premium, not covered by the employees’ contribution.
In other action Monday, the board:
•Approved the resignation of Tom Ferguson, girls’ golf coach, Jay County High School.
•Unanimously approved the fourth cycle driver’s education contracts for Dennis Dwiggins and Ted Habegger.
•Accepted the 2003 summer school contracts for Dennis Dwiggins, Ted Habegger, Dave Humbert, Sharon Newman, Kelly Smeltzer and Pete Vogler.
•Granted field trip requests for JCHS Foreign Language Clubs, Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio, Thursday, June 5; West Jay Middle School Newspaper Staff, Six Flags and Kentucky Kingdom, Friday, June 6.
•Unanimously granted the school corporation bus request from Zion Lutheran Church pre-school class, in Portland, on May 21. The bus is going to be used to teach children school bus safety and how to properly ride a school bus.
•Voted to approve the construction of the Patriot Powerhouse. The board had already approved the fund-raiser for the building, but still had to approve the construction.

•Accepted a donation of $6,000 through the Jay County Commissioners to be used for drug and alcohol awareness and education. The money was collected through user fees from drug and alcohol offenses and disbursed by the Jay County Drug Free Coalition.
